If you know what you got, then why are you selling it with such absurd premium you idiot lol XD RTX 3070 for $750 is just absurd and I hope it'll sit in his hands until he'll have to sell it with a loss just to get rid of it.

Yes. It's to show that it is their picture and they actually have the card. There are people who make fake listings and just use other peoples pictures to pretend they have it.

If they're just using the stock photo of the card from Nvidia's website then that should set off your bullshit detector.

Beyond a certain level gas generators start to be more space and money efficient as the size and cost grows.  I saw a battery once that was a lake carved out of the top of a mountain. The working fluid was water.  They’d pump it up using electric pumps and run them backwards to harvest electricity.  Terribly inefficient, but the difference between high use time and low use time was enough to make it worth it. Was in Massachusetts I think.  Long ago.  I read about another somewhere in the world that was a cog train on a hill.  For coal or something.  They loaded the cars with something heavy, concrete rubble maybe, I don’t know.  Anyway it worked more or less the same way.

For mining? None lol.  Anything that could last more than 10 mins would be huge and extremely costly. All you would benefit from would be automated rig shutdown on power loss.

Wasn’t intended as any more than that. Unless there is a battery a power company actually has to produce the exact amount of power used by a grid as it is used.  There’s some slop that can be handled within the power generation devices and by turning generators on and off, but the result is a power company has to know how much power is being used by a grid where. Illegal grow operations like to steal power which generally is enough for probable cause, making the police’s job easy.  So they’re going to be low hanging fruit.  Low hanging fruit gets picked first.  Zoning can be a thing though.

You have 83? Hah! We got him guys, we found the problem, all the GPUs are here..... 🤣

With that many GPUs I'd love to experiment in different ways of cooling them and also how to power them, profits aside there I things I like to try at my own cost like building my own 300kg battery to pair up with my solar array. I still have no idea if the battery is a net benefit or not with the charging and discharging cycle I have setup but I don't care, plus the last few power cuts here I've had power ready to use that lasts up to 10 hours or more.

One quick and very rough way to amortize hardware cost is to look at finance charges.  If you were paying off a prebuilt at X dollars a month, how much would it cost to finance the computer you have?   The impression I get is it pays for somewhere vaguely around maybe half your computer.  That’s extremely rough though.

Not sure if you caught the part where I've been doing this since the beginning of 2018 or not, but I do appreciate your concern for my HVAC system.

Based on your response, you more than likely assumed that the bulk of my mining operation occurs in the climate controlled portion of my house.  Fortunately, it does not.  Only a hand full of GPUs, (mine and the kids gaming GPUs) mine within the the climate controlled portion of the house.  Here in Virginia, most houses have basements, which is where the majority of my mining equipment is located.

During the summer, fresh air from the exterior of the house is supplied to the rigs and exhausted back to the outside.

During the winter, the fresh air/exhaust to/from the outside is cut off and the rigs heat the 1,100 square foot basement (85 to 90f).  We then leave the door to the basement stairs open and heat rises from the basement up the stairs where is sucked into a filtered return for my central HVAC system.  The central blower then circulates the heat throughout the 1st and 2nd floors of living space.  For the last 2 winters, we haven't had to use our electric heat pump or gas furnace for any additional heat.

Again, I appreciate you looking out for us.

Not a single GPU that I own was paid for with money outside of mining profits.  I started mining January of 2018 (after the first huge pump) and I've been buying cards and building my trading portfolio since.  Years ago when I started, I was told by many in this community who spoke from second hand information read somewhere on the internet that it was completely unprofitable and nothing more than a scam.   All I can say is I hope the scam continues to fill my basement with GPUs.  lol

I started with 4 GPUs and I'm currently at 83.  I need to drop 2 more 30 amp 240v lines first, but I've already mined/traded enough to more than double that amount.  None of which came from my savings account.  Please don't stop scamming me!!

solar panel doesnt only cover my rig, it also covers part of my house's electricity and keeps me in the lower tier of electricity bills
mining aside: avg 564kWh per month (july to nov) and 0.12 dollar per kWh (highest tier electricity that it's operating to save in) with installation fee of $6k, about 90 months, give or take, 8 years or so and my panels would pay for itself.

    now, mining:
electricity: 3900x + 2070S, consumes around 337W underload (from the wall, measured just for you (and triple check my old calc)) while mining, 246kWh per month, which is 29.52 dollar a month
    raw income: 3900x @ 13kH/s = $0.9226 a day, or $27.68 a month
    2070S @ 40MH/s = $1.3 a day, or $38.86 a month

    profit per month (hardware cost aside): 66.64 - 29.52 = $37.12

so yea, hardware cost aside, it's making money
so my PC is earning back what i spend on it, even if it's not profiting
as for hardware costs, i am too lazy to dig for receipts, but i'll include a rough cost from top of my head in spoiler below if you're that keen
and i always said mining wont make u rich (unless you're REALLY into it), but it's a nice way to offload the cost of your hardware if you have cheap electricity (I do not, at 0.12 dollar per kWh, it's not cheap at all when US avg is like... 10 cents?)
now imagine what those farms are getting, if you say they're operating on much cheaper electricity

I mean, you could've just went to a profit calculator, key in your electricity cost (or the national avg if you're in high cost area) and look at it that way, i suppose

just for interest, i wonder how long it would take for the solar panel cost to be recoup if i mined with all the power it outputs

i live in a tropical country, there's no seasons

based on above calc, hardware cost aside
about $450 a year, which is equivalent to a new GPU roughly every year (if you can get one for that price anyways, rip myself too)

idk how you configured the settings but my calculator says differently
and this calculator agrees with my calculation above

soo... yea, it's a nice hobby to have
I get to play with tech, and get new tech out of it

kinda wanna see what flaw in my calc u can dig out, in case i've been missing something all these times

I don't find mining interesting myself, but there's also people whose favorite game is Cinebench. They could also be rendering a frame of the next CG movie, but they are rendering the same image over and over instead, often at very low levels of energy efficiency, to see if their latest hundred-dollar custom loop tweak shaved some Celsius somewhere.
From my perspective, to each its own, as long as they internalize any cost generated by their activity. That requires well-functioning markets and market failure corrections. If so, whatever you do with your stuff, you are adequately compensating society for removing said stuff from an alternative use, and choosing to do so because you find it more valuable than what you are paying for it.

With that in mind, there are a number of potential issues manifesting themselves in scalping and mining; however, they are very different, even opposite at times, of what people in these threads typically point out. With a majority of users coming from proud market economies, I'm really curious on what views people actually hold with respect to markets as a resource allocation mechanism, and how contradictory those views can get. However, that would become off-topic in a half off-topic discussion, so I'll have to delay my inquiry until finding a suitable place for it.

Yes/no.  Back when I originally started mining, the cost of GPUs had skyrocketed due to GPU shortages.  I bought some used GPUs on the used market at or above MSRP on those cards.  It panned out for me, but it was indeed sketchy buying used cards for brand new or higher prices.

I have not ordered GPUs in bulk from Nvidia (just one or two per order here and there), but I do often max out quantity limits from typical retailers like Newegg, Micro Centers and so on.  I've learned a few tricks along the way of increasing the amounts I can get, but nothing high speed, low drag or cool for that matter.

Most of the cards I buy are though retailers and sellers on all the common social media platforms.  Nothing fancy.  I just consistently do it.

Yep, I buy GPUs like everyone else, but I just do it more often.  I have kids and they all have gaming PCs.  Each of their PCs is switched over to mining after they get done with their allotted gaming time for the day.  I have a gaming PC as well and it mines a great deal more often than it renders 3D images.  lol

I retired in 2015 and picked up mining initially as a "let's see where this scam goes" in very early 2018.  I've been hooked since.  It's literally become its own source of income outside of my military retirement check.  For the last 2 tax seasons, I've filed my tax returns as Self Employed and I pay the IRS their fair share of my earnings.  I also write-off everything I'm legally allowed to claim.  Trust me, the IRS gladly accepts my fake scam money as a legitimate source of income.  I'd say I'm more honest about my tax obligations with the IRS than the majority of US Citizens are.

I've shown up early to Micro Center to buy a card, but never camped out sir.   As a result, I never got any of the Nvidia 30 series cards or AMD 6000 series cards on release day.  The 3060 TI FE is the first card that I picked up on release day, which was purchased through Best Buy's website earlier this morning.

To specifically answer the last part of your statement, yeah, I don't have a job and I have nothing better to do.  lol

I guess while you are here, I'll use you for your authority on this subject. As a miner, have you ever purchased a GPU from a scalper? Have you ordered any GPU's in bulk from Nvidia or any board partners/manufacturers? Or are you doing what the rest of us are doing, but devoting more time and effort into it since you've practically turned it into a lifestyle? I've been curious about the thought process of miners, and wondered if they were among the people camping outside my local Micro Center. If so, that makes me feel better than automatically assuming "Man, these people have no jobs and nothing better to do", lol.

My friend, you fell victim to marketing. Marketing doesn't dictate a products intended use. It merely exists as a means to push sales. Slapping "gaming" all over a product doesn't make a product exclusively a gaming product, no less than slapping "military grade" on a product make it exclusively used by the military. It's all buzzwords used to pander to people that do not know better. This is nothing new, nor is it exclusive to our tech industry as it is often used in the automotive industry as well.

Your overly aggressive response is unwarranted, especially the hostile approach of "answer this or get out", made worse by the fact that the question you posed was not at all difficult to answer nor was it relevant to your following use of the "fanboy/sheep" label. Your use of the pandemic and the decline of mental health as a justification is also weak, as this has nothing to do with miners whatsoever. You are asking that consumers be empathetic towards others as if it is their responsibility to do so for products that are of no legitimate concern to their physical, mental or emotional wellbeing. Miners (or consumers in general) should not be responsible for the decisions others make because they were unable to get a graphics card. An inverse argument could also be made that gaming can cause just as much emotional and mental stress and that miners are saving gamers by buying up the graphics cards. This is especially true for anyone that plays competitive League of Legends (my one and only joke in this paragraph).

The users on this forum need to grow up and understand that there are tech enthusiasts that exists outside of gaming that use their hardware for other purposes. I myself am not a miner nor do I ever see myself diving into that pool, however I respect the hustle of those that wish to expand their mining empire. If they want to put in the effort and put their finances on the line, by all means, have at it. I've actually enjoyed the services that miners have offered me in my line of work, as I consider them the most valuable GPU guinea pigs in the industry. If anyone is to find inadequacies in a GPU power delivery/cooler design, it's the miners.

While it can be a bit of a bummer to have to wait extended periods of time for a GPU upgrade (still waiting on a reference PCB 3080 to go with my new water block), it does give me time to research and explore options between different brands and manufacturers as well as wait out any early revision/adopter woes. With that said, patience isn't something one can teach, so I won't waste my time trying, but I do implore those of you that are at odds with the mining culture to look on the brighter side of things and take the good with the bad.
