TimoHalofan reacted to KarathKasun in Legal recourse for botched computer repair? (Canada)
Thats not thermal paste in the socket. Looks like a ghetto pin repair job using clay to support a broken pin.
Anyway, the CPU is likely fine. Overpasting doesnt kill CPUs. Crap in the socket doesnt kill CPUs either.
My question is, if you had the knowledge to even take the CPU out and examine it, why did you take it to a repair shop for a simple MB swap? Thats like a 10m job.

TimoHalofan got a reaction from NDRE28 in Poll: How do you upgrade your PC?
Same. Current plans are either a AMD Ryzen 9 3900X or a AMD Ryzen 7 3700X with 32GB ram, M.2 SSD (most likely NVME) and a mid/high range mobo. But depending on how much time it's gonna take me to get the money I might only upgrade when the next platform rolls around.

TimoHalofan got a reaction from Thready in Poll: How do you upgrade your PC?
For me it mainly depends on: Money and goals/purposes I use the system for. Normally most of the time it's just a part by part upgrade however I am currently planning a big upgrade that I hope will last me a while

TimoHalofan reacted to PopsicleHustler in Poll: How do you upgrade your PC?
Obviously upgrading individual parts is the way to go. If I see that my GPU is unable to maintain desired FPS, I will buy a better one. Or if I bump into RAM limit I simply get more RAM.
In more rare cases when entire system is dated and upgrading a single part means it would get bottlenecked by the rest of the system, then its obvious that an entire platform needs upgrade.

Just DIY your own security with Rasberry Pi then.

TimoHalofan reacted to XA33 in I don't understand the obsession over thin and light
Why do laptops these days HAVE to be thin and light? They can't pack too much power in a thin chassis without thermal throttling, and it's annoying especially if you pay over $1200 on them. What if you're doing CAD work, play games, edit videos or you just want a retro-style laptop that will last for a long time, have all the ports you need, upgradability options and an excellent keyboard? That is the Lenovo ThinkPad P53... but I don't really see reviews of it anywhere I've looked. I think the sweet spot for a laptop is between 2 and 3 kg. What do you guys think?

TimoHalofan reacted to Altruist in I don't get why people like/want wirelesscharging?
Just to begin im an anti-wireless charging guy or anything i just see why it liked so much, and heres why.
1. it's harder to use the phone while it's charging
2. it charger MUCH slower then current charging tech (samsung, huawei, oppo or even usb pd)
3. it's not as efficient as wired charging (energy loss)
Guys change my mind, tell me the advantages of wireless charging and why you think its good :D

NVLink SLI is still worth it. SLI setups would be even more worth it if more people believed #1. -

I look at it from a purely practical standpoint - I, like most people, have a handful of audio devices that don't have bluetooth and would like to keep using them considering there's absolutely no reason to get rid of the jack in the first place. Furthermore, bluetooth devices need to be charged, which isn't always convenient. Bluetooth also drains your phone's battery more.
Can I make do with bluetooth? Sure. But why should I?
