Fellow gamers, do you like the "gamer aesthetic"?

Would you buy a typical MSI laptop with black & red accents and triangular shapes?

Or the ASUS ROG Phone II?

I know I wouldn't. Those devices look like plastic toys, they are ridiculous. Razer can get away with selling their laptops for ridiculous amounts because they're basically the only company which makes gaming items that look like normal devices. How hard would it be for MSI, Asus & co to just make a square, black/white laptop with just their branding on it?

i was about to respond but i dont think i count as a gamer anymore lol

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Builds:

The Toaster Project! Northern Bee!

The original LAN PC build log! (Old, dead and replaced by The Toaster Project & 5.0)

I'm more concerned with the hardware inside and the performance rather than how it looks, they can put all the red accents or whatever nonsense they want so long as my stuff runs and it doesn't get in my  way of doing things

Also, marketing. Flashy design is easier to market and sell to possibly morons who might know jack**** about hardware, since as far as I know certain "gaming" laptops are awful value for money

I like minimalism look a lot, never understood that overly gamer look.

For phones- Galaxy Fold, surface Duo or s9 look is awesome

ASUS ROG Phone II?

That was a spec stunt, really good for emulator. Not really for me but i can see why people would buy it.

For laptops, i like the Aero 15, ASUS ROG Zephyrus or XPS 15.

It depends. I appreciate a slight gamery accent, but nothing overly crazy.

Maybe like a few triangles on the side, but that would be it unless i was only gaming and  I didn't care about looks.

I couldn’t agree more. I’m an adult who happens to enjoy video games. It is not my entire identity. I don’t want someone to look at my laptop and think I live in a basement watching hentai all day. Thank god manufacturers are starting to realize that adults who have money will spend more for something that doesn’t look like it was designed by a 12 year old.

If that wasn’t blunt enough, no.

What I really hate are those "gaming" chairs (AKA a $89 car seat on an office chair base). They are an overpriced ergonomic tragedy compared to proper 24 hour operation office chairs. Why anyone would buy an expensive one over something like a Knoll ReGeneration or something similar is beyond me. I can only imagine it is because they have never used a proper chair.

A man after my own heart lol  I got my 'Gamer' chair from officefurnature.co.uk It's not black or sharp looking but it'll take up to 23 stones 24 hours a day 7 days a week.  It's also rather lovely to fall asleep in

With all the Trolls, Try Hards, Noobs and Weirdos around here you'd think i'd find SOMEWHERE to fit in!

Might as well go the scrap yard, pick out a half decent Recaro semi-bucket seat and mount a chair base to it tbh

I never understood gaming chairs, and I think those that cost more than even the top end bucket seats people put in their cars (track/race cars even) are frankly absurd

Same here as long the hardware can keep up depending on the game being played.

well not really if its comfortable and matches your setup (granted with not so absurd price tag) i don't see a issue with.

I dont like it at all, I did when I was 15 tho. That's why I have a Logitech 710+ keyboard, wouldn't have gotten it today. I like more minimalist look.

Also don't understand gaming/racing chairs, they are so uncomfortable.... I have a office chair that is way more comfortable.

i honestly don't like msi designs beside the stealth series and dislike the red accents but asus rog strix and zephyrus look nice and honestly my next laptop will be zephyrus. worst offender is origin pc and alienware.

now however if this laptop only job was performance i wouldn't mind the gamery look.

Personally I really dislike the look.  It's cluttered, tacky, bulky, and looks cheap imo.  But, I'm probably not the intended demographic.  I think we all like to imagine that the over-the-top stereotypical gamer doesn't really exist and it's just a fabrication made by combining the worst and most extreme of different elements, but I think in reality, it might be more common than we'd guess, and I suspect these products are aimed at, and loved by, them.

For a phone, definitely not. For a laptop I don't really mind because it just sits at home or I take it to friends.

The thing is, for most people, if we buy a portable computer, it's to use it outside. I bring my laptop to university for example, so I can't possibly have a disgusting MSI laptop. Ended up overspending on the Razer Blade Stealth for this very reason.

If it's done tastefully (small red accents, no plastic, etc) then I actually quite like it - I like the new black and gold color scheme on MSi's new laptops personally.

Oh for things like uni/work I would just buy a second laptop. A laptop that suits gaming isn’t usually the same laptop that would suit uni/work.

The MSI PS63 Modern has a GTX 1050 and tremendous battery life. My Stealth's MX150 is enough for the type of games I play, and has great battery life too. So I'd say you can have both in one device.

If it's not overbuilt, yes. ASUS' Strix line has looked really nice lately, and I do like the fact that everything moving to RGB leads to more grey/black mobos that fit better with most color schemes. I have a few X58 Classified boards and they have the red/black gamer aesthetic that's been popular for a really long time, the ASUS Rampage III Formula I had for a while was also like that. I am happy my X99 Classified isn't though, it has a teeny bit of red but other than that it's the usual EVGA simplicity, they've kept that up for a while now (had a 980 Ti SC as well, a very simple and clean GPU vs the very nice but also very red and black MSI 980 Ti I had). I used to go full RGB, now go for just a clean look with no RGB at all, so I like more muted hardware. My current rig is 95% black/silver/grey and looks really clean. Only splashes of color are the teeny bits of red on the X99 Classy and the brown corners on my iPPC NF-F12s.
