That did it. Downloaded DDU and ran that. When it booted up it initially looked like that it was going to go into 'power saving' mode but then the Windows screen came up. Thanks.

Thanks for the suggestions   Seems whenever I post new gear is coming out. I'll wait for the new stuff to come out. I'll go AMD for this build for sure. Using the RX 480 for a while seems like a good idea as well. Thanks again.

he already has a case and probably a decent psu to go with. also 2060 super is overpriced since oyu can get rx 5700XT instead and it is quite a bit faster than 2060S
kinda bad value. 5700XT makes more sense. OP should wait for rtx 3060.

he would have to chage the motherboard for that. and since he chages the mobo he could go for AMD which makes more sense.

I'd wait for Ryzen 5000 and RTX 3000 series to come out/become available. These launches will at the very least drive down the prices of current hardware. (You might want a 5600x or a 3060 for example)

Also bear in mind, if you can struggle on to the end of the year, lot of new stuff coming, CPUs and GPUs so the prices listed above may fall to reflect the fact that they are older.

Though not sure AMD CPUs will fall much, as they are pretty competitively priced anyway.

Holy hell, just searched for an i7-4790k for sale and the prices are like £200-£300....for a massively out of date CPU.  For that price you might as well buy a cheap B450 board and a Ryzen 3 performance would likely be similar.

Yeah frankly your system is old, and if you want to update you might as well wait for the end of the year and buy an entirely new system rather than trying to limp along with something that realistically you would want to replace so much on in any event that there would barely be anything left.

The only things that you would keep are your case and power supply.  The upgrade path for Intel on your motherboard is quite limited and apparently, at least in the UK, massively overpriced.

This is a list I threw together, just looking for reasonably priced stuff:

PCPartPicker Part List Type Item Price CPU AMD Ryzen 5 3600 3.6 GHz 6-Core Processor $259.75 @ Vuugo Motherboard Asus ROG STRIX B450-F GAMING ATX AM4 Motherboard $189.99 @ Memory Express Memory Corsair Vengeance LPX 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3200 CL16 Memory $99.99 @ Amazon Canada Storage Western Digital Blue 1 TB M.2-2280 Solid State Drive $157.50 @ Vuugo Video Card MSI Radeon RX 5700 8 GB Mech Video Card $459.99 @ Newegg Canada   Prices include shipping, taxes, rebates, and discounts     Total $1167.22   Generated by PCPartPicker 2020-06-16 21:10 EDT-0400
So $1,160 and you have replaced everything in your system that matters and will have a machine for a few years.

Or pick out what you want from the list.

The Pro has a 200mm in the front and a 140mm in the rear.  You can easily get by with that for the initial build.  Add more fans later if you want.

The Pro M only comes with a 140mm in the rear, so grabbing a pair of 140mm to introduced fresh air is advisable.

Why not get the Enthoo Pro M? I have the Enthoo Pro and it is awesome, but it's pretty large and a micro ATX motherboard looks so tiny in it. The Enthoo Pro M is really nice, though you should add a 140mm front intake fan to it.

With your budget I would recommend investing in an SSD but that is entirely personal preference. the 290x would be a great edition to your pc.
I suggest you look around for good cases because cases are mostly personal preference. IT should be decided mostly on appearance in my opinion since most cases that are more than $50 have decent cable management and airflow.

If you are gaming then a GTX 970 makes more sense than the GTX 960 I suggested. I do think though than the Xeon or an I7 makes more sense for the non-gaming work. If the budget allows you might even give some thought to X99 if you plan to regularly use the system for larger projects.

Windows Live Photo Gallery, Google Picassa, and Zoner Photo Studio Free are three no cost alternatives for photo work.

Don't know what Linus uses for editing. If one is doing fairly light work, Sony Vegas has a number of inexpensive entry level versions. Adobe has Premiere Elements and a version that includes Photoshop, both reasonably priced. There is also the no cost Windows Movie Maker.

8 Gigs is more than any game will ever use. Barely any game will use more than 4 even with OS usage factoered in. The extra 4 is so you don't have to close your browser. You only need more than 8 if you're doing productivity workloads.

Seagate is extremely reliable these days, especially in their larger capacity drives. Any bad rep right now is undeserved. WD on the other hand refuse to make a Blue series of higher capacity than 1GB because they don't want to compete with their unnecessarily expensive Black series.

Your SSD is unnecessarilly expensive. Just get a BX100, as that can nearly match the best performing SATA3 SSD and is much cheaper

WD Black drives are unnecessary these days as their purpose was for increased random read/write speeds with their two heads, which is unnecessary in a secondary mass storage drive. Swap it out for a Seagate Barracuda which has the same sequential read/write, which is what you want in a mass storage drive, and is much cheaper.

I know you're changing platforms, but remember that motherboards do not have performance numbers. Just a featureset and power delivery. On Intel LGA1150 power delivery isn't really a problem since the highest power CPU only really pulls 80 watts at stock clock speeds (not counting iGPU load since that's usually not active). If you aren't using features like double-checking voltages using hard points and a voltmeter, dual bios, multi-GPU support, etc, than more expensive motherboards are just wasted money. For instance, on an Intel build, Z97 is only worth it if you have a K series CPU, otherwise the overclocking capabilities of Z97 is not used and therefore just completely wasted. Use a feature, or don't bother buying it.

Refer to JohnnyGuru or other similar PSU testing sites. The EVGA G1 units are notoriously bad at the regulation of the 12V rail, which is what is super important to us gamers. The PSU will technically work, just not very well on the 12V rail. Avoid it. EVGA G2 units are completely different internally and are excellent. When in doubt, make sure you check a review website that actually load tests these PSUs and gets into the details. Remember, "Gold" only refers to efficiency, which is NOT what we as gamers care about. We care about voltage ripple supression, power on spike prevention, voltage stability, and things like that.

On your cheaper build, you spend a lot on a case, when a case doesn't affect performance. You'll get more bang for your buck by going with a cheaper case. Remember, even an R9 280 doesn't really put out enough heat to warrant a case with super high air flow and tons of case fans. My current favorite budget case is the BitFenix Neos because it has cable management area (admittedly cramped, but still functional), and dust filters which is important. It only has a single 120mm fan included as a rear exhaust, so if there's money to spare, I'd probably buy a second 120mm fan as a front intake and leave it with just those two fans. It'll be just as good as cases costing two or three times as much, and the air flow is sufficient for those lower power components.

Upgraded the CPU, changed out the MB for a better/cheaper one.
Changed out the GPU out for one that has 4GB of RAM No seriously, its cheaper has the same or better performance.
