Mostly you want an exhaust you like the sound of if you have a stock engine.  It's not for performance

If you're starting out on the car scene you get premade exhaust kits, especially for imports.  They did all the heavy lifting you just put it in.
 
You also don't put a dual exhaust (two exhaust pipes from the engine) on an in-line 4, you just put two tips on at the end or after the muffler.
 
Hardline tubing also doesn't care much about all your bends and stuff, making it "efficient" with minimal routing is more about aesthetics than cooling.

No it's an exhaust system on a vehicle it's nowhere near the same.
