For DDR3, yes. On DDR4, 8gb sticks can still be single rank. 16GB is the only guaranteed dual-rank sticks for DDR4. As for the multi-rank info...

The trend has been clear for a while though. For example, even with an IMC K10 had worse memory performance than the NBMC found in Conroe era motherboards. AMD will always be a bit behind when it comes to the memory controller (unless they've managed to get their shit together with Naples).

Oh it was. Wait until you see how abysmal Trinity (September 2012) was compared to Arrandale (November 2010)

Here's the release date+info (shame I no longer have access to an i5 540M):

Today, I would like to tell a story of a legend known only as Tortex the turtle. Tortex is my computer. It is a turtle, because as my sister harshly said (as a joke) "It's going to be super slow". Also, anyone who plays guitar may know that Tortex is the name of one of Dunlop's picks, and is taped to my case. Tortex is rocking a msi z170 a pro, a Samsung 960 evo (by far my highest quality part), a seagate barracuda 320 gig hard drive, a i5 6500 that I really want to replace with something overclock able, a legendary rx 460, a corsair 750 watt PSU, all inside the awful rosewill challenger S. This is my first computer build, and I am super proud, and I think that this build addresses a certain type of gaming that nobody really talks about. 1080p, 30-40 fps. Not everybody, and especially not me, is a legendary gamer who can both tell the difference between 30 and 60fps in game, and make a difference with it. I find for honor fine at 30. This computer is so casual, that I don't even have a single ame with a competitive mode on it, though that will most likely change soon.
While I am no overclocking veteran, i think I did pretty well with my aforementioned legendary 100 dollar card. he gigabyte windforce 4gb oc edition rx 460. I maybe should hve gotten the 2gb version instead, but whatever. After a afterburner downloading nightmare with annoying issues, I started Overclocking. I got up to 1317 mhz on the core and 1835 mhz on the memory, with a fan speed of eight. Pretty darn good.

AMD has confirmed the quad core Ryzen CPUs will be using 2 CCXs, two cores per; of course, the hex cores will be the same config as well:  3+3.  The Infinity Fabric will be used on all Ryzen CPUs.

I mention this because the author in the vid states otherwise, as a prediction.

So TechPowerUp released their review of the 1800X and it's got some interesting results, it was released today (17.03.2017)

    Full review link: https://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/AMD/Ryzen_7_1800X/

They put the 1800X through a multitude of tests:
    - Arithmetic CPU Tests: https://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/AMD/Ryzen_7_1800X/5.html
    - Productivity & Compression: https://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/AMD/Ryzen_7_1800X/7.html
    - Media Encoding: https://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/AMD/Ryzen_7_1800X/6.html
    - Rendering & Simulation: https://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/AMD/Ryzen_7_1800X/8.html
    - Web Performance: https://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/AMD/Ryzen_7_1800X/9.html
    and eventually, Gaming:
    pt. 1 https://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/AMD/Ryzen_7_1800X/10.html
    pt. 2 https://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/AMD/Ryzen_7_1800X/11.html
    pt. 3 https://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/AMD/Ryzen_7_1800X/12.html

An important note: The R7-series isn't meant for gaming, if you're looking for that in the Ryzen lineup, look at the 4C/8T and 6C/12T parts that will come in April.

And I think this is what's most interesting to people on this forum so let's get to it, a few gaming benchmarks:

    Battlefield 1:

    Civilization VI:

    Fallout 4:

    DOOM:

    Rise of the Tomb Raider:

    The Witcher 3:

    Total War: Warhammer:

    Hitman:

Gaming performance seems very varied, some games work great on the R7 lineup and some games make it fail miserably considering its competition, this indicates an issue either in software or with the architecture, we'll see whether any of it improves after promised fixes and patches arrive.
    Gaming performance summary:

    TPU's summary:

    -----------------------------
    My personal opinion:

    Performance:
    - Productivity performance is outstanding for the price, there's nothing much to say here, really.
    - As for gaming performance... It's suprisingly good in some cases and suprisingly bad in other ones. As I said above, the results are mixed and that indicates an issue in my opinion, whether related to software or to the architecture itself.
I do not know whether it'll be fixed or not, whether it can be fixed at all or not, however I certainly hope so as AMD has promised fixes, patches & optimizations coming because it's a completely new architecture.

    Value:
    - Great for the price, especially with the 1700 and 1700X.

    Power Consumption:
    - Again, outstanding

This is what suprised me most with the R7 lineup personally...
It has double the cores and double the threads of the 7700K and it's more efficient in gaming! It's incredible.

    TPU's quote on that:
Though I wish TPU compared the 1800X to the 6900K and not 7700K... It'd be a much more realistic comparison.
    -------------------------
    EDIT:

DigitalFoundry released a great video in which they talk about and review the 1800X in many different scenarios, it's certainly worth the watch:

The case is very basic, but it will hold all your parts and comes with a fan.  If you put in another $40, you can get a really nice case:  NZXT S340, or a Phanteks P400, or a Phanteks Enthoo Pro M, maybe a Fractal Design (depending on the prices).

...or take that same $40 and get a 2x8GB kit of RAM.... 2400MHz for this motherboard.

Agreed - here's the thing that "climate skeptics" seem to not understand:

I, as someone who is concerned about Climate Change and the danger to our environment, am not advocating immediately banning all oil, turning off the fossil fuel plants, and trying to go green 100% right this second.

We need a clear plan, with clear action on transitioning as many energy sources as possible to cleaner sources. We need a timeframe that is clearly defined. Even if that timeframe, is say, over the next 10 or 20 years.

And as much as some people hate the thought of it, we need to put more money into Nuclear Power. Thorium reactors, etc, are very clean and produce very little waste. And the safety of Nuclear Power - even considering Chernobyl and Fukishima, are quite well regarded.

Hell, Hydroelectric has a worse safety record over nuclear - when a dam bursts and kills thousands of people - do we suddenly go around saying "BAN ALL THE HYDRO POWER!"? Nope.

Nuclear, supplemented with Solar + Wind + Battery stations to balance solar production during the night, can solve all of our power needs. And in locations that allow so, geothermal, etc, can also be added to the mix.

You're not making this any better right now:
Anyways, take a look at the prices on RX 480 cards. You can get a 4GB model easily for that budget and sometimes 8GB models go on sale for that price.
MSI makes great cards, Asus ones are good too. Sapphire of course too.

Well current reserves won't last for ever. Nuclear fission is far cleaner than other fossil fuels and might extend the amount of time we have, but even our supply of uranium isn't infinite. Current estimates give us around a century worth of resources left, assuming energy  demands stop altogether. But you can bet that humanity's energy consumption will continue to grow.

And if we have no viable way to meet those demands when we run out, then all bets are off.
Wars, mass panic and starvation , fall of entire governments, the entire worldwide economy would collapse. It would be total chaos, the return to the dark ages.

    So no pressure, everything's cool.

"Cleaner", not "clean";  Moving in the right direction, not ignoring the evidence.  Read below,, or above... I have no problem with a responsible nuclear program producing the needed energy.
Nuclear is a very compelling option, I have no problem with it... most people would not.  Well said to the rest.

Not sure why the speakers and wired keyboard & mouse for a non-gaming system. In fact I wonder at the inclusion of a 2TB hdd and DVD. From the description given all this is superfluous to requirements.

Ryzen might make sense if most of the work was going to be video editing. But it doesn't strike me as an optimal choice for a general purpose business system with occasional video editing.

You might consider an Intel build. I suspect an i5 would be more than adequate, but the budget permits an i7.

You might also consider a higher resolution monitor. For editing and business applications the larger the logical display area the better.

I would also suggest a good wireless keyboard and mouse. For general use the flexibility of placement and absence of cables make it an attractive option.

Finally, consider a smaller form factor.
