Not up to me that - I'm Returning the laptop on Monday; which is when he planned to sell it. I'll just tell him he needs a new charger

I'm pretty sure transit operators have seen people bring weirder things on board. Just yesterday on the SkyTrain, I saw a women carry a piece of luggage with a giant plastic spider skeleton thing on top it.

Best thing to do in those cases is usually reboot and print Windows Test page.  If it's not working, something happened with the driver.  Trash and re-install.  That's pretty extensive troubleshooting for a USB printer.  If it were network, you'd probably have only a few more steps.

There's that window were you can see the print jobs at least with my printers at home, and in the first pulldown menue is a setting sth called "show as offline" and this might be checked

Sophos Home is absolutely free and works like a charm. I pair this with GlassWire, which allows me to see exactly what is happening on my computer, and see where my computer is connecting to outside my home (and inside) as well as which applications have changed versions. The solution isn't automatic, with the exception of Sophos... but I don't need obstacles in my way trying to use the internet. I'd rather have Sophos give me a warning, and let me proceed to the questionable website, than block it and make me manually whitelist it.

This isn't the solution for everyone, but it sure does give you superior control.

If you can turn the WiFi off on the old one and use the new one then there is no bottleneck, seeing as all the traffic is routed via the new one.

Any adsl2+ modem should work, just get the cheapest one from a good brand like Dlink, tplink or netgear.

yeah its called arp spoofing and it used to be a rather big issue until browsers rolled out HSTS

basically with by poisoning the arp cache person 2 can make person 1's computer think it has to send its traffic through person 2's computer to get to the internet.  Person 2 can see where you are going but not what you are doing if the websites / apps you are using have HTTPS / SSL enabled.  Regardless, if person 2 knowns what they are doing they can proxy all your connections and serve you unencrypted connections to services (although this should be thwarted by most modern HSTS implementations; not allowing you to access previously encrypted services from an insecure connection)  It is also possible for the attacker to redirect your request to an alternate or non existent domain to thwart HSTS, of which there is no good solution at this time.

Bottom line, if you don't trust people on a LAN, use a VPN / Tor etc

Flashie reacted to Munich in Recycling an old Dell Optiplex into a NAS
    Hi guys,

Me and 2 friends run a small software firm at home and I'd like to setup a NAS for us to keep our work and entertainment files. I've bought 3x3TB WD Red hard drives, and we have an old Dell Optiplex (Core2Duo, 8GB DDR2) that I'd like to recycle for this.

Now this computer doesn't have ECC memory support, so using FreeNAS + NFS makes me a bit anxious as we can't lose the data. I was thinking of having the 3 HDDs in a RAID5 setup so we'd have ~6TB of usable storage. Everyone I see using FreeNAS goes for ZFS, is ZFS so crucial? The box won't be transcoding or streaming, just a plain NAS storage attached to Macs, Windows and Linux boxes, and nightly backups being done every night.

I've heard of unRaid on LTT videos and how much they love it. I'd rather use something open source, but I don't know how FreeNAS and unRaid differ when not using ZFS. Should I go for FreeNAS + no ZFS, or unRAID  [$59 =( ]?

Oh, you have that version of this heatsink. Use a small screwdriver(jewelers size), or something else very slim(like a hobby knife) and pry those pieces of crap off. Alternatively you could yank them off with pliars. Even if you ruin the clips you don't need them(when you screw it back onto your motherboard it will hold itself together).

+1 on prying them off, they're only there to keep the screws from coming out when it's not mounted on a motherboard.

Awesome. I didn't know they did that yet. They've apparently learned from the past. Only had Windows 7 SP1, then spend 4 days updating things.

Much better to get the current version.

It's hit and miss. Sometimes it works, sometimes it does not. I have experienced both scenarios. When moving chipset, things are more likely to have issues.

I would wait for the new board before installing Windows, or do a clean install once the board arrives. If you're selling the PC, better to make sure everything is set up than have to deal with someone complaining that something is wrong with the system after you sell it.

He has 2 sticks - Both are the same frequency. The board has 2 dimm slots of which he tested both sticks in seperately as well as together. He couldnt really seat it incorrectly due to the key in the RAM. He then after tested the sticks in his own laptop again - which shows both sticks of 4gb.

Wasnt really worth keeping up as a question if i had already found a solution for it - therefor i just pressed solved. If anyone wanted to find out more at the time they can shoot me a PM. Currently just finishing up some work then i will be on the solution asap
