Will windows work after upgrade?

Go to solution Solved by Oshino Shinobu,

It's hit and miss. Sometimes it works, sometimes it does not. I have experienced both scenarios. When moving chipset, things are more likely to have issues.

I would wait for the new board before installing Windows, or do a clean install once the board arrives. If you're selling the PC, better to make sure everything is set up than have to deal with someone complaining that something is wrong with the system after you sell it.

Im currently building up a PC for selling - but am trading its current mobo for a metric buttload of other tech including another mobo

Both mobo's are 1155 sockets, and i'll be keeping the same CPU.

The Mobo currently in it:

Gigabyte GA-Z68XP-UD3

The Mobo to replace it:

MSI H61M-P21 (B3)

I want to install windows on the hard drive i got for it today though. If i install windows using the current mobo - it will not stop working after i put the new mobo in?

It will become deactivated, but if you call up microsoft support and tell them that you upgraded your motherboard, they can reset your key.

Different PCPartPickers for different countries:

UK-----Italy----Canada-----Spain-----Germany-----Austrailia-----New Zealand-----'Murica-----France-----India

Well, with an i7, GTX 1080, Full tower and flashy lights, it can obviously only be for one thing:

Solitaire.

While ya'll are here - Maybe you guys can help me. The HDD is a 2.5", but the case i have only supports 3.5". It doesnt have drive bays - as they slide in and screw in. What would be a good way of putting the hard drive in then?

You can get 3.5" to 2.5" adaptors, as well as 5.25" to 2.5" if you want to put it where optical drives tend to go.

On Windows 7, you should be fine installing the OS. The advice above applies solely to Windows 10, Windows 7 isn't hardware-linked at all.

Awesome - thanks man - will go ahead and install now then
