Hawkster16 got a reaction from Real_PhillBert in Thoughts on US gun laws.
I just thought that I would try to clear up some of the fallacies that I have found in this thread by giving some statistics and state my own opinion on the US gun laws even though this thread is getting a bit old.

    Stats:

In Europe, the countries with the least gun ownership tend to have higher murder rates while countries with the most gun ownership tend to have the lowest murder rates.

Also, countries in Europe in which handgun ownership by civilians is banned have higher murder rates than their neighboring countries that allow handgun ownership by civilians.

These statistics came from this Harvard study done by Don B. Kates (LL. B) and Gary Mauser (Ph.D). I strongly encourage anyone that is interested in the effects of gun control and gun ownership to read the entire study.

      My Opinion:

In my opinion, the US gun laws are alright how they are, and I don't think that gun ownership in the US should be limited any further that it has been already. I understand how people that haven't grown up around firearms or learned about gun safety from an early age can't understand why people need guns, but as a person that has grown up around guns, I think that the right to own a firearm shouldn't be infringed upon by the federal government any further than it already has.

Think about it like this: Compare gun control laws to the Patriot Act (which is something that I think we can agree upon is bad). Both take away the liberty of the citizens with gun control laws taking away the right to own a firearm and the Patriot act taking away the right to privacy. As Snowden said, we shouldn't give up our liberties just because we don't need them now, but we must keep them in case we need them later. I think that these two things (Patriot Act and gun control laws) are very similar and both infringe upon the liberty of the American people more than we should allow.

Even though most of us consider the Patriot Act as not increasing the safety of the American people, some people think it would increase safety. While I think that gun control laws decrease the safety of the American people, some people think those laws would increase safety. Even for the people that think these two things would increase the safety of the American people, think about what Benjamin Franklin said:

"Those that would give up a little liberty to purchase a little security deserve neither and will lose both."

Actually England had lower crime befor the gun ban. Check the stats. Also you had William Wilberforce while we had Lee and Grant. England hasn't been violent since "rountop" was a slur.

It's not that we're expecting an totalitarian coup any day. It's a deterrent. Countries don't have nuclear weapons because we plan to use them tomorrow, it's to scare anyone from trying in the first place. But look at any tyrannical regime around the world, from Nazi Germany, to North Korea, to China. Do you think it's a coincidence that those countries don't allow guns? Bad things happen when one group has a monopoly on force.

Guns are ingrained into the fabric of our country. It was armed ordinary citizens in large part who rebelled against Britain. Bad things happen when one group has a monopoly on force. Do you think it's a coincidence that totalitarian regimes like North Korea don't allow guns? So it's very ignorant to say that that anyone with a gun is a redneck looney, you don't understand our culture. Banning guns won't work. We've spent a trillion dollars on the drug war in the last 50 years, and where has it got us? Nowhere. Drugs galore in this country. Do you really think gun control would do any better? Newsflash, CRIMINALS DON'T FOLLOW LAWS.The murder capitol of the country is Chicago, and they have some of the toughest gun control in the country.
Mass shootings always happen in gun free zones, where cowardly shooters know everyone is defenseless. England has such a high robbery rate because thugs KNOW that every person you assault is disarmed, where as in plenty of places in America where everyone carries, robbing someone is rolling the dice on your own life. I know plenty of people who carry, and a few people who have defended themselves with their guns.
Would you rather burglarize a house in England, or a house in the backwoods of West Virginia?
America's gun laws are sufficient. If you buy a gun in a gun store, buy one from someone who's day job is selling guns, or mail one over state borders, you must get a background check. The background check system should be made more thorough, the Federal system doesn't always find people with certain convictions. Buying a gun from your bro in his basement does not require a background check, and that would be unenforceable anyway.

Yes, but they wouldn't be able to use those (at least not everywhere). Take into account that we've had our asses handed to us by insurgencies in Vietnam, Iraq, and Afghanistan. Why? Because the public behind the government, aren't going to support the whole-sale bombing of a city, to get just the insurgents living in it. We could have easily wiped out the communists in Vietnam, but we didn't,, why? Because it was a televised war, and the politicians worried about losing the support of the public at home.

the same thing would apply in the US. It wouldn't be people living in the mountains, those people would move into the cities, where the military can't bring its full force down on them without killing thousands of innocent people.

Not to mention the large portion of the military that would NOT fight against their own families and people. The government would just not win.

Nope, soooo much ignorance and nope.
      Saying this once.

The entire US military could not stop 60 million gun owners. And the police would not be on the side of the government, if only for self preservation.

    two words, "unwinnable, insurgency".

Why is that a problem? If someone's actually gone and put the effort in to get a CCW permit, they're probably not gonna go commit some crimes with it.

The violence issue in the US does not stem from the firearms laws. The majority of the violent crime in the US is concentrated in the impoverished urban areas of the US.

The problem of violence stems from education problems, poverty problems, and cultural problems.

I have been a competitive pistol shooter for the last 5 years IDPA and IPSC. I shoot between 5-10,000 rounds a years through many different firearms, and I have even gone a step farther and own a few NFA firearms. Firearms can be a perfectly safe hobby, just like motorcycles, horse racing, car racing, or even fishing.

Whether or not you're allowed to have guns in your home does not impact violence. Violence is a state of mind, if you're insane enough to really want to hurt someone you do it, gun or not. That said I think it's perfectly reasonable to allow people to have gun. Yes they can hurt people but a lot of folks are passionate about them. Cars can hurt people as well, so can a shovel and so can a spoon if you really want to.

There was a pack of six coyotes in the woods on my property. About 300 meters from my house. They get to our barn, and they slaughter our chickens, take down our cattle, and probably kill our foals and horses. So a gun is needed. You will NOT stop a pack of coyotes from attacking, using only your bare hands or any sort of melee weapon. You'll probably die.

The aim of the Islamic extremist groups is to establish an Islamic state and further spread the religion. First the Middle-East, then Europe as parts of Islamic empire. They won't just go away even if we play chicken and bury our heads in the sand.

However, I doubt how much Anonymous can achieve. Their activities might even hinder efforts of national governments to combat the extremist groups.
