Tower Builds

Hey! I am completely new to computer building. In fact, a week ago I didn't know anything about most hardware you find around, let alone all of what seemed to be a complicated sight inside my old towers, ha ha. Given my disclaimer, please bear with me and my ignorence. I am trying to learn all I can as fast as possible! But, of course, I am left with some questions and ineptitudes. My hope is that those with experience might answer a couple of my questions as well as look at the components I h

So, what should I get next? Your thoughts!

Hey everyone. I'm new to the forums, blogging and Linus' website. I was I guess you could say a 'Virgin' PC builder till a few months ago. I have my PC fully built now, just barebones really. I bought everything I would need to get up and running; I'll list specs below somewhere. I have my eyes on a few things I would like to get, but I thought I'd ask some people who have been in the game a bit longer than me for some help or advice in what to get next, heres what I have so far: CPU: AMD Phen

Samsung now pays AdBlock Plus to have the ads blocked that Microsoft paid to have unblocked

What a galactic move! As of today, Korean consumer electronics manufacturer Samsung has started to pay AdBlock Plus (ABP) for blocking Microsoft ads. This is an answer to Microsoft themselves paying ABP to have their ads unblocked, which was the reason for Microsoft ads surfacing even when your AdBlock was active. No word has been received from Microsoft. Rumor has it though that they are considering additional payments to ABP as well as integrated Microsoft ads in their new Spartan browser. S

Getting Started With Repairs

Working In The Industry: You'll find that sometimes you will need software that your client doesn't have installed, in cases where getting access to the internet is not possible this can be a real nightmare. So to prevent this, it helps to carry just about every utility you can with you ether on a USB thumb stick or a CD. Personally, I have two folders that contain portable software and software to be installed. The former contains several small programs for monitoring and testing that can be t

Duel Red Mod 290x's

Finnished this blog now?: Not quite, I am yet to do the Grid2 Benchmark but I can talk about the general use of the cards. Before modding, the reference card was extremely loud, as you can imagine, whereas the Tri-X cooler stayed almost silent. After this mod, I found that while the total noise for both cards has been reduced, the single 120mm fan is having to work harder that the three 80mms on the Tri-X. So it's louder post mod unfortunately. On the bright side though, the card runs at the sa

Anew graphics card here and there yea last one i bought was gt 610, so after saving up enough i figured it was time to build (dun dun duuuuuuun!!) the flurry of in

Important!

Whats Going On?: Almost as soon as I started mocking up the layout of the drawer, I found that the total thickness would be too much for an under desk drawer. Moreover, the width and height of the case would bee too much to fit, practically, on my desk. With careful consideration to the style of both my office and the PC, I am going to be swapping over to a PC on the wall. However, I will still be building a PC into a drawer. I plan to sue older 939 socket era hardware and some passive cooling

Important!

Things Changing: I was in the process of mocking up the layout of the drawer PC build, Smokey Attempts: PC In A Drawer, and I realized that the mechanisms I need to implement that will allow the drawer to be extended without disconnecting wires will add upwards of 5cm to the total height of the drawer. A total of around 19cm is too much to fit under the desk. In addition, the width and depth of the mock up will have it too large to be a practical desktop. Unless I sacrifice looks for function.

Researchers build cluster of 5 XBox One to achieve high-end-PC performance

Researchers of the University of Utah have successfully built a cluster of five Microsoft XBox One. Inspired by the various clusters built from PlayStation 3s, this monster machine is ready to take on the most demanding tasks. Don Dufrene, head of the laboratory, tells us: "We originally intended to build a much larger cluster, but could not provide financing. Thanks 'bama." Therefore, the team took all consoles acquired so far and connected them - with stunning results. "We are now able to run

LED Desk Back Lighting Project

LED Desk Back Lighting Why? Because what the hell it looks cool! Who doesn’t want it to look like they’re some crazy nut head with colors flashing everywhere, but on a more serious note. I bought a 16 foot strip of Waterproof LEDs off of Amazon for $25 which included the power adapter, a 44 key remote with 6 “DIY” settings, IR Control box, and the 16 feet of LED strip. Let me start off by saying this is an amazing deal and these work great for there intended purpose and are great for how cheap

VRM Temperature Benchmark (Gaming)

Grid 2 Benchmark, Max Settings, 2560x1080: Maximum VRM temp was 64 degrees, well within acceptable limits considering the up to 105 degree guarantee. However, Tri-x Sapphire cooler VRM temps will not get beyond 50 degrees with the same settings. This is due, most likely, to the difference in heatsink size between the two cards rather than the airflow. After I ran the bench on loop for 50 minuets, the VRMs dropped down to 40 in a matter of seconds and only took five minuets to get back to the id

I need a computer...

Hi everyone, I currently have an old laptop and looking to upgrade to a gaming pc. I'm a highschool student with a job so budget is big for me. Looking to spend under 800$. I've done a little research and came up with this build. Although, the one problem with this build is that it is over budget. If this is a good build then I'll save up a little extra money and build this, but if there are any places where I'm spending too much money I'd love to know! Here is my build. GPU: SAPPHIRE Vapor-X

VRM Cooling... Yeah... "Cooling"

Finally Some Results!: Geil VRM sinks came this morning, only two days late... Anyway, these sinks are pretty small and with a fan ghetted on the card pretty poorly, they still hit 103 degrees with furmark. However, in regular gaming, I am seeing 95s on average which is on par to the reference cooler that was on here. This post isn't about the core temps but I'm really happy with them. So this higher VRM temp is worth the sacrifice. Can I Make It Better?: I can certanly get rid of the thermal

Project Retroid

I had been mulling for a few months about making a 'totally awesome' case mod and trying to make a SFF system similar to an Alienware Alpha or ASUS GR8 but I'm not going to be able to do that without mortgaging my soul. Thinking all was lost I realized I would only be using it for games far below the system specs I was targeting. Time continued and I realized that with the option of 3d printing and manufacturing services, things weren't going to be as bad as I thought. Going from a Core i5 dow
