Active Steam member surpass xbox live

http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/70573-steam-rises-to-65-million-active-users-eclipsing-xbox-live/

Steam is 10 years old

Steam : 65Million, Xbox: 48Million, PSN: 110Million

- Only about half of the 48Million Xbox live users are on Gold

- That’s still over 20M more PAID subscribers

- Most played game atm is DoTA 2 with 500,000 daily users

BBM gets 10 million downloads on ios/androids in the first day

http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/68498-bbm-app-on-iphone-and-android-reaches-10-million-downloads-in-first-day/

BBM allows for some pretty cool stuff:

- you don’t have to share your mobile number to text someone as you just need their pin

- picture sending doesn’t SUCK compared to normal texting

- better attachment support

- Encrypted end to end, not going through google servers, not stored on BB servers as far as i know

- and some more

TONS of fake reviews… are there tons of fake downloads as well?

I called this out months ago, BB should have given up hardware years ago and just became a software company, their messaging system is awesome and if they capitalized on their enterprize encryption software by pushing it to other devices they could have made a major play…

- Much more compelling now that it’s cross-platform. Abandoning iMessage when I moved to Android kinda sucked. Lots of room for carriers to take this back by being not poop-heads about text messaging, which should just be free.

Nexus 5

16GB version sold out in less than an hour

http://www.technobuffalo.com/2013/10/31/nexus-5-sold-out-16gb/

- Has Google reached the same kind of cult status as Apple? No need to sample devices or do much to generate hype. Everything they do or talk about is huge.

- Interesting that 16GB is more popular given price difference. Lots of complaining about no SD expansion and yet… People don’t even seem to need the storage?

- 1080p phones… Necessary at 5”???

- Off contract pricing - How do you feel if you’re Samsung, HTC or another premium phone maker? Margin being taken out of this biz...

- Kit Kat expectations - Jon’s thoughts

Android 4.4 KitKat brings some unexpected improvements

http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/70793-%E2%80%8Bandroid-kitkat-leak-suggests-big-improvements-for-cheap-phones-and-wearables/

- Google utilizes the release of Kitkat(4.4) to optimize for lower performance devices… gearing up for glass and smartwatch tech for sure

- “Optimizes memory use in every major component”

includes tools for entry level devices with memory as low as 512MB

- Designed to tackle the fragmentation issue which has been a really big deal in the whole Android vs. Apple conflict

- include support for three new sensors: geomagnetic rotation vector, step detection and step counters directlyly competing with Apple’s motion processor

- Power savings on the way as well apparently to the tune of sensor and Wifi batching

New “Fullscreen Mode” for apps allowing for edge to edge support with a hidden nav bar

PS4 audio support is… lacking

https://twitter.com/ThatMichaelM/status/395655495286939648

PS4 will not support MP3s, Audio CDs, external HDDs, or DLNA.

You can play background music while playing games but you must subscribe to “Music Unlimited” http://www.sonyentertainmentnetwork.com/music-unlimited/internet-radio/

(Would only need the Access plan which is $4.99/mo, Premium is only for mobile)

Bronze vs. Platinum PSU’s

http://anandtech.com/show/7474/analyzing-power-use-80-plus-bronze-vs-platinum

Folding 24/7? Win, get a beast PSU

Game for an hour or 2 a night and shut your comp off other than that? maybe don’t bother

One thing to note is you can carry a PSU from system to system(until they change something like maybe ditching sata power?)

Actually slightly larger of a difference than I expected but I think the numbers I have ran in the past were with 8 hour/day averages not 24/7

Many of the cheap power supplies even are coming in at silver or gold nowadays if you catch the right sales

ALL the phone bloks/ Project Ara news!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BaPf4ZIbDVM&feature=youtu.be

http://www.anandtech.com/show/7469/motorolas-project-ara-phonebloks-from-an-oem

- size/efficiency of design, regulatory issues, historical failure (Intel Whitebook)

http://t.co/IAHdthFhoi

Further miniaturization of components could enable it to be done.

My Thoughts aside from all of this:

- I think it's a low end to midrange play. Will leave room for wasted space and weight. Enthusiasts will still demand improved performance frequently enough this won't be practical for them.

- Alleviates some of the issues brought up in that thread -  upgrade all components and left with two phones same as before...

- Google focusing on Android perf on low end devices with as little as 512mb. Glass? ara?

- Comparisons made to PC upgradeability - Actually that’s exactly why I think it makes no sense. Low end commodity- non-upgradeable, high end - makes no sense to upgrade

Google Smart watch and Google Glass news

http://abcnews.go.com/Technology/google-glass-smartwatch-reports-google-coming-body/story?id=20714433

GLASS

- Explorer Edition owners can invite up to 3 others

- new colours, new earbud, prescription compatible

- expected release of a real product that people can buy in 2014 SmartWatch

- Final stages of design and looking for mass production partner

http://www.usnews.com/news/articles/2013/11/01/google-may-launch-smart-watch-before-apple

- rumoured to be positioned as a “personal assistant” running android and using Google Now

- Focused on battery life - learned from Samsung, although I’m sure they already knew that.

- I love smartwatches. I get a kick out of all the “predictions” that companies will make smart watches

FAA Allowing mobile devices on airplanes

http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/70915-faa-loosens-rules-for-e-devices-on-airline-flights/

Pilots are starting to carry iPads for quick info lookup instead of information binders… so essentially they were breaking their own rules

They still reserve the right to ask you to put things away like heavier devices, also claim that in SOME cases it can still cause interference and in those cases they will ask that everything be turned off but this should be very rare

Even when I was a little kid i had doubts that turning off my gameboy colour was going to save the massive plane from crashing…

While this is awesome and I’m happy its finally happening because honestly it was just silly when I hear that senate members have stepped in to push this through I wonder if there aren't TONS of other things they should be doing instead

GTX 290 accidentally shipped as a GTX 290X, benchmarked

https://twitter.com/DodgyMalay/status/395853568806502400

I worry a little about driver support, we have problems with drivers up until the day before release

Would also like to see a wider range of benchmarks of the card

I wonder if someone got fired...

Hey guys? I’ve ran all my benchmarks and released data beforehand can you send me the right card now?

780Ti Rumors and leaked photos

http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/70979-nvidia-geforce-gtx-780-ti-has-2880-cuda-cores/

compared to a titan it has more cuda cores, higher base clock, higher boost clock, higher memory clock, higher effective clock, higher bandwidth and a lower price…. WIN

all of that coupled with the possible (conflicting pictures in the 1st post) black ID fins and black text this could be the sexiest Nvidia card yet in this series

but is it worth the jump from the new 780 pricing to the rumored 699?

This essentially makes Titan a very unattractive buy for anyone that isn’t a cuda programmer or for some other reason needs double precision

Phone stops a bullet

http://www.ctvnews.ca/world/florida-man-s-cellphone-stops-bullet-fired-by-robber-at-gas-station-1.1517873

A man entered the gas station and asked a clerk for help. Then he showed the worker a revolver and demanded he open the safe. The suspect fired a round at one of the clerks and fled. Police say the worker had no idea the bullet had hit his cellphone until he pulled it out of his shirt pocket.

I bet he will buy another HTC!

Dell laptops smell like cat urine

http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/70576-dell-fixes-ultrabook-that-smells-like-cat-urnine/

“Fixes”... units still shipping with the… odd smell

if your warranty is out they wont fix it although if you are able to live with it for a year then what the hell…

How did this make it through QA?

Apparently it was a problem with the manufacturing process and not a biological contaminant

Apparently not a health hazard

Its a business class laptop… imagine walking into a meeting with your gear smelling like cat pee

Massive Xbox takes up space, builds hype

http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/70713-giant-sized-xbox-one-takes-over-vancouver-parking-lot/

Parking lot taken over by giant Xbone, because parking in Vancouver wasn’t hard enough Microsoft.

That’s pretty much it… there is a big box in a big car lot - GG media hype machine

Oh also you can pledge your gamertag on their One Source website for a chance to win prizes(?) which include an xbox one

John Rettinger was awesome, definantly would like to see him on there again. Possibly longer and with more topics, but him currently being a parent, it's understandable why he cannot.

If you are unsure where to put your question or comment, your best option is in the General Discussion section.  You can also send Luke or Linus a question on Twitter.  They usually do a pretty good job of answering questions assuming they're not busy creating content for LTT/Linus is in 'Dad Mode'.

My PC specifications are in my profile.

The guy that tweeted the flexible screens to Linus stole my credit :( He tweeted it to Linus a full hour after I created the thread:

http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/71167-new-screen-tech-solves-problem-for-bending-oled-screens-extremely-exciting-and-flexible-li-ion-batteries/

Pretty messed up :\

Edit: I want to make it extremely clear I'm not upset with Linus in any way for not "crediting" me, I wouldn't mind if Linus had shared this without linking to my post. What upsets me is that some people in this community are dishonest enough to do this.
