R9 390 Strix fan profile issue

Phobiarg

I recently bought an R9 390 Strix and am trying to setup a small overclock. I have achieved a very slight overclock and want to do a benchmark, but the fan profile is driving me up the wall. It will not use the custom defined one I set in the Asus GPU Tweak II software. I tried to use Speedfan as well and that does nothing either, it stays in its auto profile even when set to user defined, I can set it to manual and put it at a straight percentage, but then its buzzing away without any load either.

Right now it is using 0% until 60C, then 30% until 70C, then it slowly creeps up from 30% to 40% until it hits 80C. At 80C it just goes balls to the wall 100%, at 100% it cools more than enough and drops down to 79C and the fans drop to 40%, then it heats up to 80C and it goes back to 100% and keeps repeating this cycle.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Uhh.. Return the GPU?

ASUS coolers for Radeon cards are unexceptional, if you have the chance I'd return it for a different cooler (preferably SAPPHIRE Nitro, XFX Dual Dissipation, , MSI Twin Frozr or Powercolor PCS+.)

If you wanted you could also set the fans to run at 100% all of the time.

I used to be quite active here.

I don't plan to return the card unless this card turns out to have unresolvable issues with the fan profiles.

Asus are abysmal nowadays - returning it is highly advised

You should know that the current AMD drivers are having fan issues.

You can wait for the update, but if you have doubts about your hardware, it sucks to return it, but is super worth it in the long run.

that is incorrect - no fan issues are observed on MSI, Sapphire, XFX or Power Color - Asus simply have bad GPU Bioses

Looking into return, you've convinced me... The question I have now is, is the Sapphire Nitro worth a $20 premium over the PowerColor PCS+?
