Overclocking a 6600k

Hey guys,

I just finished building my first pc. Hypee! I wanted to overclock a bit. My cooling setup right is a Cyrorig H5 Ultimate with the stock fan they give you and 4 Fractal 140mm GP-14. I have 2 fans in the front as intake and another intake fan on the bottom as a intake. With the last fan being on the rear as exhaust.

System was built in a Define S and the motherboard is a Asus Z170-A.

Right now my CPU temp hovers around 35-37 when 18% CPU usage is that an OK temperature at that percentage or is that to hot. I then played some Heroes of The Storm and it went up to 45ish% usage and is sitting around 50 degrees.

Are those temps fine?

Thanks!

Yes those are fine temps.

The fan is most likely barely spining at that load so the temp is somewhat above room temperature. I have 36*C on my 4.5GHz 4770k at 1% load. (Dark Rock Pro 2 cooler).

Can't be sure unless you give us full load temperatures. In general anything below 80c is fine for intel cpus.

Don't ask to ask, just ask... please 🤨

yes, those temperatures are fine.

but can you run a CPU benchmark and give us the temps at full load?

Well i overclocked to 4.2 just to start with and ran AIDA64 and pretty much immediately my processor was over 90 degrees and thermal throttling,

whats your voltage?

I would change your cooler to a watercooled aio and re-apply thermal paste, it shouldn't be that high.

either your cooler isn't on properly, or it isn't on 1.2v, or it needs delidding. reseat your cooler, set the voltage manually to 1.25v, disable all the power saving features so it cant change the voltage and run it again. if its the 3rd thing that i said then you can get any cooling you want, but it will still overheat.

hmm....

play a couple of games and look at the temperatures and come back here to post the temps you got. I doubt it will be hitting 90 degrees in gaming scenarios. ^ do what he said.

Good news! I reapplied thermal paste reinstalled the cooler and made some changes in the bios. Overclocked to 4.4ghz and ran some new tests. Numbers came out so much better this time!

Just did a short test going to run a longer one tonight. I did overclock to 4.5ghz and it crashed after 24 minutes of the stress test the error said

Event 41, Kernal Power

The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly.

Then i took it down to 4.4ghz and the first 20mins of that test worked great.

Thanks again for you help guys couldnt have done it without you!

Hmm my pc crashed again last night with that same error.

I think it something to do with Sleep mode. I put it into to sleep mode last night when I woke up it was crashed.

You hear anything about that problem?

lots have people have issues with sleep mode, sometimes it does wake up, sometimes it crashes when waking up like yours. maybe try shutting down instead? you have an ssd dont you so it won't take that long to boot from cold.
