SSD or HDD for games?

Rovert19

Hello, recently my 1tb drive I use for Steam/Origin/Uplay decided to die on me. I was wondering which of the following would be a better choice?

I am considering either getting a 500gb Samsung 850 evo or a 2tb WD black drive. I was wondering how much of a tangible difference I will see between the two. Keep in mind I already have a 128gb ssd for my OS but if I do get the ssd, I will make that my OS drive. Right now I'm leaning towards the 2tb drive because of the extra space and is about $65 cheaper. Is there a reason I should get the SSD over the HDD?

I would like to hear your thoughts.

Unless having shorter loading screens is important to you, I'd go with the 2 TB drive

Starting games and load times would be so much better, especially if there's a lot of loading in some of the games you play. Personally I'd get an SSD and never look back.

if u want quick, just go with WD RED 2TB in RAID 0 ( plenty of enough for gaming )

Value > WD BLACK 2TB 1x Best

Thanks for the responses. On second thought I think I'll get both and put the current ssd into my laptop.

That's an interesting idea but the difference in price is only about $30.

yah, the wd reds arent too expensive compared to blacks and their made for raid... in raid they will perform great hence why a raid wd red is also a great decision, costs abit more then black but a raid wd red will perform much better then a wd black... easily

i mean u can go raid with wd blacks too,,, but the wd reds are designed for it, they work great really

What are your thoughts on seagate's SSHD? I just stumbled on one and it's actually less expensive than the WD black drive.

personally the last thing i would recommend is getting seagate, too high failure rate.. i would personally go with WD Blue if i would want cheap, they perform almost just as good as wd black  ( tiny difference only )

the last thing ul want is when u got ur hdd full of games or other stuff and it starts failing on u ( welcome to seagate :L ), sure there are plenty of drives taht work fine... but also plenty ( 12-14% ) that fails :L for that reason i would never recommend seagate internal drives , external it wouldnt hurt too much

Ok, I guess I'll have to do a little more research. In my computer I have 2 WD and 2 Seagate drives. I had 1 of each fail on me so far. :(

wd failure rate is 2-3%, seagate 12-14%  with the wd one u had super bad luck o_o then again to fail 2 out of 4 drives... is also bad luck but yeah u get the point D:

Hardrive imo, I can't use 500GB, I only play CS:GO and recycle my porn.

Xeon 1231 v3/ H81m - P33 / 8GB Corsair Vengeance/ GTX 950/ Fractal Design Core 1000.

Hey there Rovert19,

As the guys explained, games only benefit from faster storage performance only for he loading times and autosaves. Few games need to load huge texture packs while in-game and that's where this might also be a factor, but this is usually open-world games and WD Black can handle this easily. I'd consider if you really need the extra seconds in loading time or if you have any other use of faster access times or more space would be beneficial. Since you laready have a OS SSD, I'd go for a HDD solution. :)
