@Greek people, do you want to go back to the drachma or stay with the euro?

Sammael

Also, let's talk about the name for that money.  Drachma... it sounds like a currency issued by the Dracula government, very dark and ominous.  "euro" is very airy sounding, rupee is very legend of zelda sounding, pound is very british sounding, but drachma... I don't know man.  Maybe it sounds better in greek.

I am impelled not to squeak like a grateful and frightened mouse, but to roar...

Well I'm not Greek, but I have been interested in the European economics for quite a few years now..

I dont think a different currency will benefit Greece, as they largely live of tourism (not saying  that's the only thing, but still) so having a currency everyone else (pretty much) in Europe has is optimal.

But I am not a professional.. Not sure what could be done.

heh...its better for them to stay but it will make their pride and ego satisfied for a day when they vote no or leave the eu

...then ill laugh...because it make the news vaguely more interesting before....it also gives me something to talk about when you get to that moment with a friend of a friend and you have run out of small talk and are standing there awkwardly...

I dont think the ECB will give Greece the boot, but that wouldn't solve any problems even if they did.

The problem is Greece's out of control spending and failure to collect tax revenue. As long as those two problems persist, the currency they are using is irreverent.

But I am far from an economics expert and have never been to Greece, I have only been following this story as it has been unfolding.

As xsilent I was born in Belgium but have family includ grandparents living in Greece. First of all it's Drachme and you prounounce it somewhat as Drachmi, NO A, for the love of God. For us Greeks outside Greece it would be good for Greece to get the drachme back because visiting Greece would be cheaper, it would be better for Greece as well, but only if it doesn't focus on import from other countries.

Actually, if greece leaves the euro and goes back to drachma it's gonna be dissastrous for the economy of europe and the economy of greece(which is already pretty shitty), and if we decide to stay in the euro we are gonna have an even more hard time, going with either is not really an option, people are already on the edge of poverty(myself included), I don't think the years that are coming are going to be good for us, even if they are shitty already.

Well, it's gonna be a disaster if any of these will happen, for both Europe and Greece.

I believe it is pronounced:  (not regular TH sound, but a combination of TH and D... a hard TH or soft D)  T H   R A H (rolled R and Hard rolling H on the RAH)   M A - - - -  THRAHMA.

I know there are very hard working Greeks, some are my family members.  Two of my first cousins are doctors.  The older one got a job relatively quickly, and was pushing many 16-18 hour days consecutively.

The younger one was not so lucky and spent days working as a painter, and nights driving a the family taxi cab.  Imagine doing this for years with a medical PHD in your back pocket.  He has two kids now, I believe he is currently working as a physician.

My aunt (their mother) got a job recently for the first time in a looong time, to help out.

Trik'stari lives in the southern USA BTW.

As far as leaving the Euro, it would probably better for Greece but would be a hard transition.  I believe there is a good argument for the entry of Greece into Euro being a total mistake from the start.  There economy was too small, and there was an established systemic corruption in their governing bodies.

I'm living with my mother and my other 2 brothers with a monthly pay of 500 euros per month, it's hard. Electrical bills, phone and water takes most of that, so are left with almost 200 euros to survive the month.

staying with euro is out of option and referendum also showed that they dont want to.

What they want is every privilege of staying in the eurozone while having other countries dump money for free. That's essentially what you read between the lines from what random people said yesterday.

They also blackmail actively the EU holding open conversations with Russia and that is essentially because they know Greece is rather important from a geostrategic point of view.

Honestly, most of us are very hard working (myself included when I find a job sometimes during summer), it's just the stereotype that greeks are lazy and useless with most of things that gives us the bad name :/

I blame Papandreou for getting us to where we are and ΠΑΣΟΚ. Simitis got us into the euro with fake documents, that's a crime in itself!

Enouhg is Enough the European Union is sucking the Greek people for the past 6 Years already.

lolwat?

You're the ones sucking money from the EU and not doing anything to get your shit straight. Look at Portugal, Ireland, Spain, Italy. We all got money from the EU and the IMF but we did what we were supposed to. We got tax raises, we didn't receive as much money as we were supposed to. Our unemployment increased exponentially. And yet we're recovering. You know why? Because we did what we were supposed to. Something Greece didn't.

Greece just chilled, doing nothing to significantly rebuild its economy. Your government's stand was only to get money and eventually hope the economy would recover by its own. Guess what? That doesn't work like that.

The EU is better off without you. As a matter of fact, you weren't even supposed to be in the EU.

What they WANT is to default on the debt and leave the Eurozone.

Well, that's surely the governments position, I'm sure.
Good luck with future loans, greek people.

Even if merkel's plan to remove all debt out of greece was into motion (which it didn't due to soilbe or however you spell his name in english) we would still need to borrow money so that we can start our economy, which will lead to mroe debts, the whole thing is indeed a mess.

Hey let's look a bit at the housing bubble in the USA in 2008...

Why would you give a mortgage to someone that by their current yearly household income could NEVER afford to pay it off?

This is a symptom of a very mutated deviation from any sort of debt based economy that has a value, being a service and all.  The debt based economy should be a service to the population, not a way to screw the many to benefit a few.

If you default you won't be able to get any. Nobody will be dense enough to loan money to a country that didn't even cared to pay their previous debts.

Look at Argentina. That's what the future holds for you.

Sure, the sad thing is Greece got many of their debts excused. And the loans/bailouts were at an extremely low interest rate, compared to other countries' in the EU.

Alright, just stop here.

You can't compare to what the people do, with what 300 retards decided.

The fact that most of that money was stollen and consumed by corrupted fat politics is what got us in that situation to begin with. Your reaction is a pretty racist one to add aswell.
