8oo$ Gameing Rig For Freind

Go with an air-cooled i5-4460, gaming doesn't use more than 8GB of RAM, and put all that extra money into the graphics card, where a GTX 970 would be a worthy upgrade.

His Limit is 800$. He already has a monitor to use. I can get him his os. Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks

If you're going for AMD (I know a lot of people here will tell you Intel Intel Intel) then try the FX-8350. It's around $150 USD and looking at your budget, and the total cost right now, you have some headroom. It's OCable with the watercooler to 5.1GHZ (stable) at 8-cores. It does have a high TDP though.

As for the HDD, go with a smaller HDD and a 120GB SDD if you can. This will make a world of difference. He can look up how to install games to the other drive instead of the boot drive. If you can't do that, try not to go with a 7200RPM, they tend to be very noisy in my experience and from what I have heard.

I also agree with mroz10, go with 8GB of RAM, and get at least a 970.

You dont need a aftermarket CPU cooler, you are gaming and he has an $800 budget. Put that money into the graphics card. You dont need 16gbs of RAM. See if you can work in a SSD.

6300 is still good. Its basically like the eight core just a little less performance

I have a build for $600 that has an aftermarket cooler, an SSD, an octa-core, and all the cool stuff minus the GPU for $600. So I'll just take my 750Ti out of my current PC, and just get a new one later on.

Thank you all for suggestions i tweaked it a little

i removed the water cooling (though my freind really wants to make use of this for a few years (maybe i can upgrade it for him later))

i dont think an ssd is in the budget just yet (yet another later upgrade for him(and i own 2 7200 rpm hdd there not that noiey and he wants fast loading games and needs mass storage (i thinks its a nice balance)))

im personally an Intel fan but i think the 6 core amd is right in the sweet spot for him

i did switch to the 970 which i agree over the 960 any way

and i lowered the ram to 8gb which i do thinks plenty but i wanted to give him headroom encase he did other stuff with the pc later (so yet again another potential upgrade later)

this is my updated list any more suggestions also the fact that its lower in cost is better he really is on a tight budget and 800$ was the limit

This build is the one to get. AMD CPUs suck for the overall price of the motherboard and cooler along with the CPU.

Why go AMD when his budget can allow a newer Haswell Refresh CPU like the i5-4460 which will run games smoothly, is power efficient, doesn't generate as much heat, does not bottleneck the 970, very future-proofed COMPARED to AMD's old FX series CPUs. Don't get me wrong, AMD's CPUs have their place but on a budget like this... Just no.

From benchmarks, it has been shown that it doesn't bottleneck even a 980Ti and since he has a water cooler, who cares about heat output? He's also sticking a huge PSU in there. No need for Intel here

Edit - Hadn't read that he removed it yet. AMD cards have been shown to perform not as well on benchmarks as their Intel counterparts, but in games there's nearly no noticeable difference. Also, as for the GPU, you can usually find R9 290x or 280x or a decent price. Not sure how they stack up to the 970 though.

not exactly what id call powerful... Much too little on the GPU.

I suggest a 4460, MSI h81m-e34, 8 go cheapest ram, evga 500w, cheapest 970, cooler master n200, and a 120gb ssd or 1tb hdd. Use stock CPU cooler.

I put together a list like this recently and it was around $700

What benchmarks are you looking at? The i5-4460 is clearly better in ALL aspects! So what if he is sticking a big PSU in his rig? Who doesnt want more power savings especially in the long run? A 8350/8320 still needs to be OCed to even come close to a 4460 while a 4460 at stock (which it will be forever) still beats it.

If he is rendering and doing other content creations then maybe the 8-core AMD is better. But on purely gaming, NO. Also looking at the platform, you can get PCI-E 3.0 on a B85 chipset while on AMD you only get PCI-E 2.0 on a similarly priced 970 chipset. Yes it doesnt make a difference today but for future proofing especially since HBM is coming it, it could utilize the higher bandwidth of PCI-E 3.0 lanes.

The GPU is there to be upgraded. A couple months down the line pick up a 970 or just remove the 750ti and go for a 780ti. I also prefer a 380t because its much more portable than other mini itx builds. The cooler allows for high overclocks on the 4690k. An ssd can be added now or down the line as well.
