290x vs 970 1080p update?

Tiber1337

I know 970 was beating the 290x when it was released ,with the latest drivers and optimizations ,  which card is better for 1080p, 290x or 970? did anything change?

Don't think anything has changed. Gtx 970 is a pretty powerful card for its cost :)

They are more or less the same.

But you shouldn't be paying the same price for a 970 as a R9 290x.

R9 390 = GTX 970

Recommend what is best, not what you preffer.

290x has more VRAM. Not that you will need it for 1080p, but it's always nice to have.

i7 4790K || R9 290X + R9 290 || 16GB G.Skill TridentX 1866 || Gigabyte Z97MX Gaming 5 || Crucial MX100 256GB || WD Caviar Blue 1TB

in some countries (like here in the UK) if you shop around you can get a 290x about 15-20% cheaper than a 970!  last week a saw overclockers selling a 290x for £205 while a 970 was £260+ but obviously sales change ect.

Gaming PC: • AMD Ryzen 7 3900x • 16gb Corsair Vengeance RGB Pro 3200mhz • Founders Edition 2080ti • 2x Crucial 1tb nvme ssd • NZXT H1• Logitech G915TKL • Logitech G Pro • Asus ROG XG32VQ • SteelSeries Arctis Pro Wireless

Not really. The base 290x has 4gb, so just 0.5gb more fast ddr5. There is the 290x 8gb and the 390x, but those are different.

but some games don't even see the last 0.5gb of the 970, but it doesn't matter unless using sli for 4k

If it's no rush just watch out for sales, you could even consider the 390 or the 390x if you can find them cheap, though i doubt this. There has also been some talks that Nvidia is going to lower their prices of their top tier 900 series graphics cards, as a response to the 300 series and the fury cards. If they are the same price go for a 290x 8GB, otherwise go for the cheapest.

Motherboard: Asus X570-E

Memory: G.skill Trident GTZR 3200mhz cl14
