GTX 960 vs GTX 970

jackcharles

So i need to cut costs on my build. if i go from a 970 to a 960 am i going to see major performance differences? I am buying from Canada so the prices will be different.

At 1080p, the 970 is going to max out everything. The 960 is not, although it will play most games on near-max. That being said, the 970 will feel much more stable and clean, so to speak. At 1440p? Forget about the 960.

Drop down to a one or two terabyte drive. Drop the 4690k to a 4460, and get an h97 motherboard instead of a z97. Finally, get an NZXT s340 case instead of the one you have listed.

Keep the 970

2tb HDD and 120GB SSD is cheaper, 1600MHz memory is better price/performance, and that's it.

Nah...you don't want a 120 SSD. They fill up WAY to fast. Games now can be up to 30 gigs. Get a few of those and your full. Keep the SSD.

Get a cheaper 970 though, not the strix. Look at a PNY or Zotac. Strix doesn't cool as well as some others. HDD yea, go smaller unless you are cloning other drives to it and CAN'T go smaller.

Motherboard, so many choices. I always try to find mobo's with only 2 way SLI because I'm never going to use it anyways. z97 is solid though.

Get rid of windows 8.1 and just download windows 10 while it's still in beta and free. it's free to keep once the full retail hits.

Also consider getting a cheaper case.

8GB of ram and 120gb SSD are no goes iMO. Games are easily 60GB these days. 256-512gb SSD min IMO and 16GB of ram.

For GPU I would pass on the 970 as it's only got 3.5GB of vram and at 400 you could get a used GTX 980 on eBay. Or if you wanna cut costs get a used 290X (not reference) on eBay.

you dont need 16gb of ram -_- especially since hes on a budget and i doubt hes going to be rendering heavily, he can upgrade later if he needs to but right now me and all my friends have 8 and we havent noticed a problem, with gta open with a couple chrome browsers, steam and steam chat im still not using 8gb

ARMA 3 performs poorly on all hardware, and is very, very CPU-intensive. it's not a game that you "can" max.

Grand Theft Auto V can be maxed out at 1080p and run at between 70-100fps... I am on a 970 + an FX-6300, and I get between 40 and 80fps... That's with max everything + 2xMSAA and MFAA.

from the ingame counter im using under 3gb with the settings im using, i would check gpu tweak but its glitching lately and always cranking my voltage to the max for no apparent reason and i just reinstalled it and now im gettings constant driver crashes so im going to have to find something else to check, but i knwo before this happend the max i was using was about 3.2gb

the guy who said he played it fine on 1gb of vram had it on low console-potato settings. I think it's kinda ridiculous to spend 1500+ USD on PC and just end up having to play on low settings cuz the person made a few small mistakes in how they allocated their funds.

I run GTA V at 60 fps locked (really 75-95 most of the time if I turned VSync off) 1920x1080 with most settings ultra or as high as they go (some stop at very high) on my EVGA GTX 970 SC. No MSAA and grass is on Very High though, and I run it off a cheap 7200 RPM Seagate HDD. Ultra grass is an enormous performance killer. My settings have my VRAM max out about 3.3 GB usage. None of the advanced options other than the streaming while flying are turned on though, that one setting doesn't make too big a performance hit but the rest do.
