GTX 960 vs GTX 970

jackcharles

So i need to cut costs on my build. if i go from a 970 to a 960 am i going to see major performance differences? I am buying from Canada so the prices will be different.

The difference is about $150.  If you don't plan to game above 1080p, the 960 is perfect.

Get Windows 10 now while it's still in beta and buy a used 980 off eBay.

It's slightly cheaper but much better performance wise. Your system will be able to play any game @ 1080p Ultra.

im so confused, im running lower settings then you and i get massive dips down to 30 and sometimes 10-2 fps

Here are the settings I run at:

u2KhO5z.jpg

9YTtUQF.jpg

awKKwHi.jpg

eRwNSl1.jpg

It says 2485 MB predicted VRAM usage, but it's really 3.3 GB. I can get a locked 60 fps everywhere but the forest near Mt Chiliad if I turn on 2xMSAA, but in that one area I drop to about 51 fps or so if I have 2xMSAA on, so I just normally use only FXAA.

CPU: Xeon E3-1231v3

GPU: EVGA GTX 970 SC ACX 2.0 @ 1417 MHz boost clock

HDD: Some Seagate 1TB 7200RPM drive

RAM: 8GB G.Skill Value RAM DDR3-1600 CAS 11

Have you rolled back drivers? 352.86 was a disaster for me because of constant crashes in Chrome, so I reverted back to 350.12. When I did this using the Windows roll-back feature my framerates were mostly in the 30s at these settings, but once I used DDU from Guru3D to wipe away the 352.86 drivers and reinstall 350.12 I got back my locked 60 fps.

I wouldn't call the 960 perfect. If you're a Battlefield or COD player then it's unbeatable at 1080p, anything above it is wasting your money. For harder to run games like Far Cry 4 or GTA V you need to jump to a 970 if you want ultra settings and a close to locked 60 fps.

There is a used evga gtx 980 sc for no reserve. is it worth the risk of getting used? it was used in a sli connection for around 100 hours

100 hours is quite a bit. How much does he want for it ? And is there still a warranty on it ?
