Hey cluelessgenius,

Is the drive a 2.5" or a 3.5" one? What was the previous enclosure? Did i come with a prebuilt external drive? I would check if the previous drive had hardware encryption because if it did, you wouldn't be able to read the data from the HDD without it's enclosure and PCB and you might need to either find the same enclosure or contact a data recovery company in order to get your data back.

well its a 3.5" drive and was originally a western digital elements external drive. so yes it had an enclosure but the pcb snapped. the drive is currently running just fine internally so i think ill be fine with an aftermarket 3rd party enclosure. i just cant decide wich one since they all seem to be made for desk use. now i would like something rugged with a bit of build qulaity to it.

Well you can look for some 3.5" portable enclosures, but they tend to be pretty big because 3.5" drives need additional power in order to run and the enclosures include a power cable and some other additional things. 2.5" drives can be powered solely from the USB while 3.5" drives need additional power from the electrical outlet.
