How much improvement from 290 to 970?

How much better would an Asus Strix 970 perform over a Sapphire R9 290 (not X) Tri-X Vapor-X?

Not much, and in higher resolutions, even worse. It also depends on the kinds of overclocks you can get on each card. As I said, not much.

So would they trade blows?

Probably a moderate amount at 1080p and 1440p considering it generally beats the 290x at those resolutions. If you're considering upgrading though, it's probably not worth it.

Previously Trogdor8freebird

5800x | Asus x570 Pro Wifi (barely enough for 64GB apparently given it's 2133 and still crashes sometimes) | 64GB DDR4 | 3070 Ti 8GB | Love that whole weeb shit

i say keep the 290 and add another 290 for CrossFire instead

Budget? Uses? Currency? Location? Operating System? Peripherals? Monitor? Use PCPartPicker wherever possible.

No, the GTX 970 will win in 1080p. Just not by much.

Compared to a strix it's a downgrade.

Compared to a real 970 it's a sidegrade.

Alright, thanks for the replies!

If you got to the GTX 970 you get Nvidia GAMEWORKS features that AMD can't offer.  if that matters to you then fine but I would just trade the 290 you have to get a GTX 970 if you wanted one.

Too many ****ing games!  Back log 4 life! :S

I doubt it'd do too much, if I were you, I'd get another 290 for the mega-twin powers to activate

Went to your profile, to double check if a second card would work, um, god couldn't find your build......

And the build on the PCPartpicker link is completely incompatible, you should probably fix that....

Follow the topics you create using the "Follow" button in the top right corner!

One day I will have my GTX 970. One day. PC specs are at my profile.

Not sure how to check what part works with what? Check out my compatibility guide!
