Found a used gigabyte gtx 970 for $115. Too good to be true?

Eyesthetics

I was just sifting through my local Craigslist then i found someone selling a second hand gigabyte windforce gtx 970 for $115. The caveat though is that (according to him) the HDMI port can't be used because he fucked up by using not enough psu, but all the other ports (dvi and display port) function perfectly normal

Is this too shady? Should i go for it? I'm not worried about him running away with my money as he does accept third party escrow account. So in case he sends me some random empty box shit he won't be getting his money. But he lives too far from me so i can't meet him

This would really be the steal of the year if it was real

What am I supposed to do?

Sounds super shady.  I would only buy it if you can test it in your system, ensure that the DVI ports work, and run some games and benchmarks.  I would even go as far as taking off the stock cooler and making sure the PCB isn't damaged.  Because of distance, sounds like that won't work, so don't go for it.

Craigslist people are shady, and that deal is too good to be true.  Proceed with caution.

If it's in good working order, snag that puppy. And if he can't take your money if it is not legit, go for it. Grab a DVI to HDMI cable or use Display Port and you'll be good to go.

Could be the gaming deal of a lifetime, you may not get another shot at this. The PSU frying something is a bit scary though.

"Using enough PSU". Wut.

I'd ask to see if they'd be up for allowing you to use it in your system and run some benches before you give them the money. So set something up somewhere, somehow.

I never buy used hardware in regards to anything being borked on it. Maybe he tried to plug in a potato.

Also do what @Faceman suggested and inspect the card thoroughly for any sort of damage.

In case the card is fucked up i can tell the escrow to hold the money until the seller settles this, when the card arrives I gotta record it (unboxing) so i have a proof in case he lies

Do that. If he claims it's real and you have video evidence it's not. That'll work perfectly. If you get this, I will give you a digital hug.

I wouldn't go for it without some sort of buyer protection, personally sounds too shady to me.

Buyer protection is one of the reasons I don't mind taking risks on eBay/paypal, as long as you can do without the money for about 1 month you're good to go so with an escrow option it might be worth a look...

Have a look at some pictures of one we know is real (Google Images) Then have a look at the one we aren't sure is real. Look for solder points, are they in the right spots?

He's just joking around.

shit, guy is a confirmed scammer, he didn't reply to my message, apparently he didn't know how escrow works, once he realized that he won't be getting the money before the card arrives in my doorstep he immediately blocked me lmao

i guess i gotta find another deal then, i'm still using the old gtx 660ti, i wanna sell it for around $150 and upgrade to either the R9 290 or GTX 960 (both cost around $216) or i may save up for a legit 970, $340.

lessons learned : never trust shady craigslist listings no matter how good the price seems. thank god i'm not gullible enough for him, lets just pray no one falls victim to him
