On the fence about r9 290x purchase.

Go to solution Solved by i_build_nanosuits,

wait until you're ready to jump on a 1440p monitor to buy a beastly GPU...your R9 285 GPU should still offer very acceptable performance at 1080p.

Hi everyone. A major reseller here (Norway), is offering Sapphire R9 290x Tri-X 4GB for 2959nok (~375$), normal price 3695nok (~469$).

I did some research and found out, that with my current PSU (CM V550S - 550w) I should be able to run the GPU in my system (full rig in my profile), just without the OC.

I have a 1080p monitor at the moment, possibly getting a 1440p one in the future. Also my current GPU (R9 285) is entirely fine, I just would like something with more kick and more future proof.

Any opinion, that could sway me either way, appreciated.

I've got 2 290x's. They're absolutely great cards, your PSU will be fine, my system (4670k at stock clocks) with one 290x never drew more than 400W from the wall when the GPU was stressed in a gaming situation.

The Tri-x is a great variant of that card too!

if i were you, keep the gpu you have and a better one later on. It still pretty good like get a new graphics card when the r9 400 series comes out your graphics card is still very good today plus the 290x is starting to get a little old

Just keep what you have and upgrade later for more performance and better price to performance ratio.

My Cheap But Good Rig: I7-3770s, Intel Motherboard (actually made by intel), 16gb DDR3, Nvidia Gtx 1070, 250gb Samsung 850 EVO SSD, 750gb HDD, Evga 500 BR power supply

future proof is a bad word, lets say longevity instead :) if youd like more longevity from your system and youre a hard core team red member, the 300 series is just around the corner. If youre willing to go team green id suggest a 970, it would have no problem running (and even a bit of OC) on that 550w

You are right that they're getting old, but they're by no means slow cards, and you also pay significantly less for one today than when they launched over a year ago.

I got mine for £200 each, which is about half of what they launched for.

But yes, you make a good point: Which games do you play, OP?

Considering your running an R9 285 i dont think i would bother, imo the difference in performance would not be worth the money spent. If anything i would look at upgrading your psu and getting a second R9 285. Of course thats only my opinion, A lot of people will probably disagree with me but ive been running multi gpu systems for years and i love them :)

I wouldn't call myself a hardcore Radeon fan, I also did consider 970 for a long time, especially since they go (Twin Frozr V/G1Gaming/Strix) for around 3490nok (~442$), just this whole vram thing bothers me. : (

Now, R9 300 series is supposed to be mostly rebadged cards (at least in my price range) so not really convinced on waiting too long.

Actually I play wide range of titles. Usually I pick a lot of AAA titles eventually, not restricted to a specific genre either. I blame Steam sales tbh.

I don't really wanna go crossfire (that would require a PSU upgrade) with a 2GB vram card.

If you are seriously considering 1440p then yes, go for it. Also, if you can get a decent resale price on that 285 then go for it!

That sounds sensible, especially since freesync is supposed to be launched soon.

Du må vente til 390 kommer ut eller til de endre 290-en til en 380.

Patience is a virtue, I know. Just some of us, are way too impatient for that. : P

2gb vram is pretty solid man i wouldnt really consider that a reason to hold back, If the rumors are even remotely true with directx 12 then gpu vram stacks anyway.

Thanks to everyone that replied in the thread. I've decided to wait until R9 300 series launch. That should give me more options, and that's usually preferable :). Most likely I will decide to upgrade my GPU together with a new 1440p monitor.
