Backed by Nvidia, Catopsys bring Microsoft's Illumiroom vision to life

GoodBytes

Catopsys presents Immersis, a project which brings Microsoft Illumination vision to life (a concept which Microsoft Research presented a while back), which augments the room with the game you play on your TV, increasing immersion. The system works by using a single projectors with a stand which is foldable for storage, that runs at 1920x1080 (that's high for a projector in the consumer space). The company claims that unlike VR, which bring you to the game, this brings the game to you. Of course it doesn't make it be like a VR set, but at least you can enjoy it with friends, and you won't have headache for those sensitive.

The project is in Kickstarter, and expected to be sold at 2500$ once the product is sold in stores (projectors aren't cheap), while you can say, it is too expensive, it is definitely going to drop in price over time, and brings this cool reality to life, and improve over time.

Nvidia says:

We definitively feel that Immersis technology is very promising and would like to make sure we provide the means to help Immersis succeed.

If you don't know Microsoft Illumiroom vision:

You can donate money here, if you believe in the project and want to see it a reality on their Kickstarter page: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/catopsys/immersis

I kinda want one... Lets see if it pan's out beyond a concept.

Many consumer grade projector are still on VGA only, so I guess that is why.

Or, it is to make it clear that the projector doesn't use anything proprietary in video signal, and that most (all) gamer have a DVI plug on their PC, and if you have HDI or DisplayPort you can get an inexpensive cable to downgrade it to DVI.

rather have a 1440P oclulus that does that same thing. its hard to justify 2.5K for essentially  extra effects.

It would be nice, if you can change the lens and use it as a normal projector as well. At least it would give 2 usage, if that is possible.

It would be really nice to play something like Euro Truck Sim 2 with this.

Um struggling to figure out why you would get this over just a reg projector :S

The problem is that you need the lens. And the lens is costly, and beside that you need a projector that support interchangeable lenses.

If you don't have the lens, then you need multiple projectors (which will give you a better effect), but it requires special software to blend the projector images together, which also requires special equipment to do. The simple fact of needing multiple projectors make the cost way more than the proposed solution.

What I like about their solution is that they will either (or have different models), offer LED or Laser projectors, which last way longer, way more bright (especially the laser one, you can see the image even on day light just fine), have little to no warm up time, much quieter, much longer life span and create less heat, but that technology is very pricey.

The projector will most likely end up being LED projector for that price. All laser projector I seen are in the 100,000$, but then again all are for theaters or for simulators.

LED projector (not the standard bulb one which is on most projectors at the consumer level), 3000 lumens, low noise (due to the LED light, and not bulb based) with a resolution of 1920x1080, and fish eye lens (costly), and looks like using a single DLP chip based on pictures (.

You need to consider all the listed above. It is useless to have a 4K projector if the image will always be blurry, or not dim, or the low life which will require to change the bulb after 1-2 years of use.

So it doesn't render the rest of the image outside of the main screen. I take it it just increases the FOV of the game and displays it past the screen instead of on the screen so it doesn't look all stretched out.

It does what ever the developer wants to do.

It can augment with a stretch FOV to give immersion but not details (that's what the your TV is for), or do an environment effect, or anything they like.

It projects on your wall, and excludes the TV at the rendering to not overlap the image. It can see where you have walls, or cabinets, and adjust the image accordingly so that it appears correctly.

So yes, the projector needs to be able to scan a room. In the case of Microsoft, they used Kinect for every projectors in the room.

This is nothing like the Illomiroom demo.
All this does is being a projector that starts where your TV ends which pretty much every projector could do.
That has nothing to do with enhancing gaming and actually adding something to the experience like sparks or flames flying out of the TV like in the Illumiroom demo.

They are making the tools and SDK to allow the developers do what they want. So they could do what they want.

flop is a relative term. If they expect to sell 5 and sold 10, that is a massive success.

Will it sell millions? Of course not. But it will probably interest people who can afford projectors, and like fancy gadgets.

Room, people have. Was not a problem with the Wii, nor the XBox Kinect.
