970 for 1080p/1440p

290x for 1440p/4k

970 is probably the better option for 1440p but it's up to you (they perform about the same).

For 4k I'd definitely get the 290x.

Both good cards but I prefer the gtx970 due to lower temps and power usage and shadowplay features like recording is just awesome. Also in the games that I play my 970 outperformed my 290x

With those prices, he obviously doesn't live in the U.S.

ah... derp. sorry, i didnt see his location was singapore.

OP: you could look on ebay for some decent deals. If $500 is the best you can find, then go with the gtx 970

he's running dual 1080p can the 970 able to do it?

If you're not running a game across multiple monitors (and I assume you're not gaming with a bezel right in the middle of your view), then it won't matter. You can run as big a desktop as you want, it only matters to your video card how big your gaming resolution is.

For $1 difference, this is one very rare instance where I'd say to buy a GTX 970 based on power consumption.

If both card are really about the same price than the MSI GTX 970 gaming is hands down a much better choice.
