Installing Linux On My PS3

I finally got around to ripping my old PS3 out of the closet and fixing it. I want to put linux on it as it is compatible with it. Now may I ask... Would I stick a 32bit version of Ubuntu on it? I really want to do so as I could finally use Linux and have something to tinker with. Thanks!

Never knew you could do that... Interesting!

They only allowed the first through third gen PS3's to have the ability to run Linux. :D

I believe it is 32bit, but I am not sure since I have not ran linux on a console since sony was selling the linux disk for ps2.

The ps3 & 360 have 32bit chips so yes.

That's what I thought. Now I need another flash drive so I can downgrade it's firmware to be able to throw Linux on it.. That'll be fun using a PS3 that is running Linux. :P

In order to downgrade the firmware you need to flash it. Downloading an older firmware won't work. And the e3 flasher is 75usd.

It needs to be downgraded to firmware 3.15 or lower.

The ps3 & 360 have 32bit chips so yes. 

Few versions of Linux supported PS3, and no not just 32bit, becuase 32bit OS' are X86 OS', it has to be one that works with PowerPC

And then Sony ended allowing to instal Linux and folding on them.. :(

Funfact: Warhawk on the PS3 had its servers running off of hundred's of PS3's and that was it.

Well, it was more like, "people are exploiting OtherOS to pirate games, better get rid of it

 

along side the teams being shaken up and the old team that was pushing linux getting thrown out, can you believe they expected people to run linux on PS2? imagine their tears now that the PS4 is x86 but has no linux support

Why ubuntu, there is lighter and faster distros out there like manjaro
