Sorry if repost I looked but I didnt found it in here.

Microsoft will stop selling Windows 7 on the end of this month 31. October 2014 for OEM. And Windows 8 (not 8.1) for Retail too.

Personaly I dont care. I think that Windows 8.1 is supperior to Windows 7 in every way and I wouldnt return back to using it. I am patiently waiting for Windows 10 but I dont plan on installing TP.

Yes another windows 8.1 person!

Good. I personally really don't care about Windows 7 now. Windows 8.1 is the best OS I've used.

They shouldn't drop Win7 support soon as they only just stopped supporting XP, they still have to go through Vista, oh wait, that wouldn't take long as nobody uses Vista by choice any more, so that could happen at any point.

EDT: I should clarify my earlier self, I meant extended support, not main stream. Sorry for any confusion.

Really? NOBODY uses Vista by choice? I call bullshit. I used it up until yesterday when I fucked it up. I'm making a VM with it this weekend so that I can use it. I used it on my computer for damn near 5 months before the motherboard croaked.

And before all of this, when I fucked up Windows 7 I threw Vista on my netbook and ran it for 3 months.

am I the only W8/8.1 hater on this forum

Nope! Far from it. Thankfully, most of the people on the hate bandwagon got bored.

I have no problem with someone disliking Windows 8.x for legitimate reasons. But most of the haters didn't have that.

And that makes perfectly logical sense. Windows 7 was released about 3 years after Windows Vista, and Windows 7 has been out for a long time now. There are a few minority though that actually prefer Vista (There's even one user on the forums here!)

More people use Windows 7 compared to Windows 98... breaking news! :P

I'm fine with windows 8. And actually, it's hard to use 7 again whenever I get the chance.

Great, now I'll have to teach my mom how to use windows 8 (after I figure it out myself, never used it) when I build her new machine. Maybe I should just wait for WINDOWS NEIN

You mean wait for WINDOWS ZEHN! ;)

But honestly, yeah, I'd wait for W10. It isn't THAT far away, and if you desparately need to build her a new machine before that, you could drop Ubuntu on it for Web Browsing, or stick the Windows 8 evaluation edition on it (Free trial basically) until W10 is released.

She needs this PC for work, it needs to work with some proprietary (Ala-mode?) appraisal software or some such shit, not even sure if it will work with w8 let alone 10 (NEIN)

We need to make it a thing to refuse to call it 10, just call it NEIN

Meh, I'm okay with their reasons for calling it 10. A little confusing, but hey, at least they aren't using GPU naming nomenclature :P

Hmm, if that's the case, you probably want to download the Evaluation copy of Windows 8.1 sooner rather then later, to confirm software compatibility with the appraisal software.

What does the software currently run on? If it runs on Windows 7, then odds are you have a 99% chance of it working perfectly fine on both Win 8.1 and Win 10. If it runs on XP, then you might have to use Windows XP Mode (Windows XP VM). I think that's build into HyperV now on Windows 8.1 and 10, but I'm not 100% sure.

I honestly don't know. It does run on w7 now, but I'm building her a new rig so need a new OS, not to mention that hers came with assloads of bloatware. I'd have to check the software manufacturers website I think.

You could try and snag a Windows 7 key now, still. I don't know how readily available they still are though, since only OEM's are still getting new licenses from Microsoft.

Newegg seems to still have them in stock, probably be gone by the end of the week.

Especially after this announcement, people will start to grab up the remaining stock. I imagine some will buy as many as they can, hoard them until W7 stock runs out, then sell them for inflated prices on eBay and the like.

Well... Good that I can keep the Windows 7 without issues for some more years. Nothing wrong with Windows 8 though (I have it on my tablet, it's not bad at all, other than the slowness, which is caused by the tablet's POS hardware, not the OS), but I prefer Windows 7 for my desktop.

I wish that the software devs (especially game devs) pushed more for Linux, but I guess that won't happen any time soon. Gotta stick with Microsoft's ecosystem I guess... At least for now.

Never trust my advice. Only take any and all advice from me with a grain of salt. Just a heads up.

Just checked her software, it is available for 8/8.1 but I know she won't like those (she's old, it would confuse her, and me). I wonder how long it will take them to support w10?

Don't we ALL wish that? I'd love to not have to spend 100 bucks on a piece of software every time I build a new computer

There's been limited success with Gaming on Linux, mostly due to Valve's push by making the Steam Client compatible with some Linux distros.

But we won't see mainstream acceptance until Linux can become as user friendly and as software compatible as Windows. As awesome as Linux is, anyone who can evaluate it logically without anti-MS bias knows that isn't the case yet (potentially never). Windows 10 looks like the OS we've always wanted, so far, so that's just going to make it even harder to switch to Linux.
