My OTT Plans for my new man cave PC

Ok.

so before you go and think what a waste hear me out.

I work as a shift Fitter and turner at a mill I have 4x12hr days at work and end up with 4 days off and a fair amount of disposable income that either goes into my Nissan Silva S15 (my latest car project) or random stuff or my PC so money is not an issue, I occasionally do video edit and stuff for family so utilizing a powerful CPU could potentially be possible at some stage.

OK now that's out of the way lets move on.

I'm Living in NZ so most things unless stated different will be in $NZD

So I LAN a lot but I love Water cooling and having a big case, big cases are not practical to go LANing with especially if you have a coupe and subs in the boot.

solution? two rigs! a smaller one for on the go and the Big boy that stays at home and never leaves... ever.

but I hate having 2 PC's with 2 different OS'es?

Soloution? a External Raidbox with Thunderbolt! :P

Shout out to the scientist's that made this technology possible :D

hail_science_futurama.gif

So here's what i'm thinking/planning-

Main Rig:

5930K

X99-E WS+thunderbolt 2 card if not included or the Asrock Extreme 6 because im going with a blue/black theme with both PC's

Corsair Dominator platinum's 4x4GB's-2133mhz

Dual 980's in SLI

Silverstone 1000W Gold of some discription

looking at a 800D but might change my mind i'm still looking for around.

and also looking at some rigid tubing with mahems UV blue and all EKWB gear  :P

Secondry rig (Most will be re-used from my current rig)

3770K

GA-UD4-TH

GTX 770

Corsair HX620 620W

not sure of case yet. maybe h440 blue?

same W/C gear but with tube res and pump combo

and then I was hoping for a "Raid Box" and boot off that and use that as the OS and install drivers from both. this will mean all my data is in one area and software raid will mean SSD's are not going to be damaged as they could in Raid 0 because of software or hybrid raid, well that's my thinking anyway? as well as a mirrored drive for redundancy and a 2TB for movies music storage etc.

anyway any ideas and/or suggestions welcome  :)

God i envy you

The build looks good, although a 1000w psu might be overkill.

The Raid box is an interesting concept, the only flaw might be having to carry it around it LANs aswell i guess?

What occurred to me as I read this was that perhaps a hot swap bay and 1TB ssd would be easier. But thinking on it I realized that the basic idea of a common boot drive is not feasible unless the two systems are identical hardware wise, i.e. the same motherboard, memory, gpu, etc. The reason for this is that Windows installs system specific drivers for motherboard and other hardware hardware as well as configuration & boot information on the boot drive.

80+ ratings certify electrical efficiency. Not quality.

the 1000w thing might be but it means I wont need a new PSU for a long time :P and don't envy me It took some grueling work to get the money together to plan and pay for it. 12hr shifts suck. :(

I KNOW RIGHT :'( they make it so hard.

Yeah the problem with that though is with the Thunderbolt Drive im looking at it would benefit having multiple SSD's in Raid 0 because It will affect the performance and im looking at 4 to 5 drives. i've actually used 1 HDD between 2 PC's before I installed the drivers before moving it and it actually worked! so booting isn't so much my worry as far as I can see atm. but i'll be doing some testing to see if its 100% airtight though :)

900D for main? or how about a caselab magnum sma8 maybe it will be in your fancy it is expensive but it's not a fixed case since you can customize it before you order it with a little few extra bucks. IMO you have a pretty fat pocket might as well help you out in thinning it out a bit >.<

edit: mind if you can do a build log on this? I'm very interested. specially that raid box.

===========================================================***Update***================================================

So I've been doing some Research over the past few days looking for a good quality RAID box that'll fit my build I was thinking the WD Thunderbolt Duo for a while but I was looking for one with more HDD slots. well after a few hours of googling and some price comparisons I found http://www.drobo.com/storage-products/5d/ to be a decent quality and pretty much what I am looking for, I wished it was thunderbolt 2 and if it had a M2 slot instead of m-sata but it still pretty well fits what I think im looking for.

second thing I tried was made a mock windows on a RAID drive and move a RAID OS from one PC to another, the RAID config wasn't recognized from one PC to another so hot swap is defiantly a no go.

I might do another day of mucking around after my night shift tonight and see if software RAID makes any difference?

====================================================***Update***=======================================================================

I've been looking around the internet for a theme the last 2 or 3 days and had the idea of maybe using A Black Corsair 780T for my Streaming rig/LAN rig and being a 380T.

My Previous thoughts were my LAN rig being a H440 and my main being a 900D or the caselabs STH10. But an ITX would be much better to carry?

Thoughts?

I do say a mini-ITX case would be easier to carry :)

that's also why I have a Prodigy ITX as my gaming rig since I rarely play at home and mostly play outside :)

Defiantly! I was thinking I could use it as a media pc too and just slap a 250GB SSD in and put steam OS on it and stream from the lounge so it would have a double purpose only thing is I'm not sure of any m-iTX M/B's around?

Hopefully there'll be a couple out soon! or else that might not be an option :S
