R9 295x2 performs better on average but 980 SLI uses less power, generates less heat, etc.

RIG: I7-4790k @ 4.5GHz | MSI Z97S SLI Plus | 12GB Geil Dragon RAM 1333MHz | Gigabyte G1 Gaming GTX 970 (1550MHz core/7800MHz memory) @ +18mV(Maxed out at 1650/7800 so far) | Corsair RM750 | Samsung 840 EVO 120GB, 1TB Seagate Barracuda | Fractal Design Arc Midi R2 (Closed) | Sound Blaster Z                                                                                                                        Getting: Noctua NH-D15 | Possible 250GB Samsung 850 Evo                                                                                        Need a console killer that actually shits on every console? Here you go (No MIR/Promo)

This is why you should not get an FX CPU for ANY scenario other than rendering on a budget http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/286142-fx-8350-r9-290-psu-requirements/?p=3892901 http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/266481-an-issue-with-people-bashing-the-fx-cpus/?p=3620861

295x2, better value.

generates less heat

not a big deal considering the water cooler. The difference in ambient temperature would be unnoticeable.

Don't ask to ask, just ask... please 🤨

True but it is still less heat.

295X2 only does about 500-600W. And if one has that card then they would of prepared themselves anyway. Also i really don't see how heat is a concern.

your point ?

Lower temps = Better longevity of the card. I think that's worth a mention

the temperature of the card itself is very low compared to air cooled 290xs

Longevity of a card is an unfounded and moot point even if it was. By the time the card craps out ... "due to heat" it will be obsolete.

  • 2 weeks later...

There is also a new NVIDIA card somewhere down the line using the largest Maxwell processor so that may in fact be a 4k geared (incredibly expensive) Titan/Titan Z style card or 980ti or something of that nature. It could also be a new Quadro or something else. Regardless it may be worth waiting to see as NVIDIA flagship cards are released later than AMD anyways (already true of the 980 and 970 but whatever the new card is could be following suit.

Edit: Sorry to tag in late, I've been looking into this today.

Fractal Design Arc Midi R2 | ASUS Z97-A | Intel Core i5 4690K | G.Skill Ripjaw 4 GB (desperately needs upgrade) | MSI Radeon R9 290 | EVGA SuperNOVA 750 G2 | Samsung 840 EVO 250 GB SSD | Seagate Constellation 1 TB HDD (also needs upgrade) | NZXT Kraken X61 for CPU | NZXT Kraken X61 + G10 for GPU | Corsair M45 | CM Storm Quickfire TK | ASUS Xonar DSX | Denon AD-H2000
