Samsung 850 PRO 1TB SSDs are a great fit for our server setup, but sending them directly to our server host would be a bit of a wasted opportunity... So we got Samsung to send them to our office, and Linus had some fun with 4TB of high performance SSD storage...

 

I sincerely hope those are configured with a dedicated RAID card in that server. Also, what kind of bandwidth does that office have that leaves the 100MB/S speeds of mechanical hard drives a bottleneck?

woah, 4 tb, u serious???? my pc only has like 500 gb, but well i guess u will need more storage than i do. 

can u do more hdd and ssd showcase cuz i dont know what hdd and ssd i should be using in the future.

recommendations would be fantastic! for example what hdd and ssd should a normal gamer be using??

Oh man these are sweet. I have a zenbook with 128gb of SSD. Its waaaaaaaaaaaaaay too little space for a work laptop let alone a gaming one!

The next step in my desktop rig is an SSD, but you might as well go big or go home when it comes to these things.

You could stop doing giveaways on the forums. It trashes the statistics with tons of 1 post accounts, and makes it unreliable for the rest of us. Why not do it over some kinda social media like sane people?

muh specs 

Gaming and HTPC (reparations)- ASUS 1080, MSI X99A SLI Plus, 5820k- 4.5GHz @ 1.25v, asetek based 360mm AIO, RM 1000x, 16GB memory, 750D with front USB 2.0 replaced with 3.0  ports, 2 250GB 850 EVOs in Raid 0 (why not, only has games on it), some hard drives

Screens- Acer preditor XB241H (1080p, 144Hz Gsync), LG 1080p ultrawide, (all mounted) directly wired to TV in other room

Stuff- k70 with reds, steel series rival, g13, full desk covering mouse mat

All parts black

Workstation(desk)- 3770k, 970 reference, 16GB of some crucial memory, a motherboard of some kind I don't remember, Micomsoft SC-512N1-L/DVI, CM Storm Trooper (It's got a handle, can you handle that?), 240mm Asetek based AIO, Crucial M550 256GB (upgrade soon), some hard drives, disc drives, and hot swap bays

Screens- 3  ASUS VN248H-P IPS 1080p screens mounted on a stand, some old tv on the wall above it. 

Stuff- Epicgear defiant (solderless swappable switches), g600, moutned mic and other stuff. 

Laptop docking area- 2 1440p korean monitors mounted, one AHVA matte, one samsung PLS gloss (very annoying, yes). Trashy Razer blackwidow chroma...I mean like the J key doesn't click anymore. I got a model M i use on it to, but its time for a new keyboard. Some edgy Utechsmart mouse similar to g600. Hooked to laptop dock for both of my dell precision laptops. (not only docking area)

Shelf- i7-2600 non-k (has vt-d), 380t, some ASUS sandy itx board, intel quad nic. Currently hosts shared files, setting up as pfsense box in VM. Also acts as spare gaming PC with a 580 or whatever someone brings. Hooked into laptop dock area via usb switch

Linus, this isn't a review. It's promotional content at best. The fact that you bounce off the Intel RAID chip is a useful bit of knowledge, don't get me wrong, but for an SSD I want to know things like:

 

-What are the I/O curves for each drive like? Meaning what workloads does the SSD excel at or fall on its face with? Game loads are sometimes large monolithic files (WoW) or reading lots of smaller individual files (mostly older games, like CS 1.5, but newer games do it too...I just can't name one I've played recently).

-A review compares the data to relevant tech available *at the time*. So put it against other SSDs you have from this year. Treat it like you used to treat Noctua fans and keep a spreadsheet or chart of data to compare against.

-Did you find any cases where the drive is bad at something? The 840 EVO reads very slowly after data is not read for > 1 month. I wouldn't expect you to find that, but if you found that the drive can't handle more than 10,000 IOPS, regardless of IO size, that would be useful to note.

-Endurance: How much can I write to the drive before it fails? 1 PB? 2? 0.5? I realize I can get this data from anandtech, but it's part of what would be useful in a review.

-Overview of any special features: Samsung pro drives come with a feature that allows up to 1GB of RAM to be used for caching data from disk, making disk access of small, frequently used files, extremely fast. Mention features like these, say whether they are useful/functional/problematic, explain what they do.

 

You used to do good reviews...this is one of the sloppier ones I've seen. Maybe you're busy, maybe you just like money. C'mon, I came for the information, gimme!

He does about the same thing with GPUs, then luke gives 3 sloppy benchmarks where they are overclocked, and doesn't write in the clock speed of all of the cards. Or add in stock speed benchmarks as well.

Well well well Linus! You have an Adaptec RAID controller on your home PC, and you are using a BS onboard Intel RAID on your server? Shame on you! ;)
 

The forum server deserves at least a cheap Adaptec controller, so you can throw those 4 SSDs in a RAID 5 array.

Raid 0 for SSDs is a VERY BAD IDEA. As SSDs will fail over a defined number of write operations - and RAID 0 does exactly the same amount of writes in all disks in the array - both drives will tend to fail at the same time...

Still doesn't change the fact, that ssds on its own won't die because of writes. They can be rewritten for so many times, that it wont cause a problem.

I don't get why people get this for anything except professional use. It's almost twice the price of the EVO and it's not like Samsung has done a massive recall on those in the 2 years they've been out.

I run three 840 Pro 512 GB's in my system in a dynamic disk setup for Games etc, they work really well, so i assume the 850 works even better!!!

is getting a 512GB 850 pro worth the cost over a 840 pro 512GB? Basically all I want it for is to put my os on and maybe a few games. I will be gaming and just want an overall speed increase.
