NCTA says 4Mbps should be enough to be considered broadband
Source 1: linustechtips.com OP: Jerakl
Source 2: hardware-360.com
- National Cable and Telecommunications Association
- NCTA represents both AT&T and Verizon
- filed documents to the FCC
- say that “broadband is already fast enough”
- claim that 4Mbps (0.5 megabytes/second) should remain the standard for broadband

- originally defined as 200kbps
- upped to 4Mbps in 2010
- “streaming HD content isn’t possible at 4Mbps”

Top websites join internet slowdown day in symbolic protest of “fast lanes”
Source 1: linustechtips.com OP: Dietrichw
Source 2: cnet.com
- symbolic protest
- participating sites used an "infinitely-loading site loading icon" rather than actually slowing down their services
- Reddit, Vimeo, Foursquare, Wordpress, and Boing Boing were among the “major” websites that took part
- call on visitors to contact their US representatives and officially protest the "fast lane" aspect of the potential new regulation that the FCC proposed for net neutrality
- Site shows what the internet would be like without net neutrality: http://jointhefastlane.com/

Destiny makes $500 million in first 24 hours
Source 1: linustechtips.com OP: Rafy
Source 2: deadline.com
- retail and first party orders
- this was the worldwide total
- biggest new IP launch in the history of gaming
- the record was previously held by Watch Dogs (for some reason sales totals are not readily available for Watch Dogs)
- also the highest-selling day one digital console release in history
- “We have more confidence than ever that Destiny will become one of the iconic franchises of this generation, and Activision’s next billion dollar brand.”
- goes on to say “Most importantly, it’s just a great game which we can’t stop playing.”
- still lags behind GTA V’s day one sales total of $800 million, as well as CoD: Ghosts’ of $1 billion

Zotac GTX 970 and 980 prices leaked
Source 1: linustechtips.com OP: Techfan@ic
Source 2: wccftech.com PRICING IN TITLE INCORRECT
- previous rumors had the GTX 970 at ~399 USD and the GTX 980 at ~499 USD
- http://puu.sh/bvhFJ/cbb66dec47.png
- this leak shows the GTX 970 at 19-22k Phillipine Pesos or 430-500 USD
- GTX 980 at 31-34k Phillipine Pesos or $700-770 USD
- article states “The leaked MSRPs by the e-tailer might end up being pre-order prices which are usually quite inflated so I’d take them with a grain of salt.”
- also have to take into account the fact that this is a site in the Phillipines, shipping charges etc.
- PRE orders

Windows 9 screenshots leaked
Source 1: linustechtips.com OP: AlexGoesHigh
Source 2: theverge.com
- TheVerge confirms the screenshots are genuine
- They are still not finalized.
- New search button next to start button.
- They are flattening the ui out to match metro.
- Microsoft has not commented.

GTX 980 will not beat GTX 780 ti in performance
Source 1: linustechtips.com OP: analpowder
Source 2: kitguru.net
- on launch there will only be cards with 4GB GDDR5 available
- overclockers.co.uk purchasing manager Andrew “Gibbo” Gibson speculates that later versions (with custom coolers) will feature 8GB of DDR5
- GM204 (GTX 970/980) is said to replace GK104 (GTX 760/770/780/670/680)
- GM104 to be replaced by GM204 cards will not outperform cads with the GK110 chip (780ti/Titan Black)(RUMOR)
- GTX 980 is quicker than the 780, but comments about how it compares to the 780ti are not yet available
- safe to assume GTX 980 performance lies somewhere between the GTX 780 and GTX 780ti

NVIDIA drops the price of the GTX 770
Source 1: linustechtips.com OP: accursedentity
Source 2: techpowerup.com
- adjusted price to compete directly with the new R9 285
- cheapest GTX 770 (2GB) expected to drop to 275 USD, only 25 USD more than the cheapest R9 285
- roughly the same price as factory overclocked R9 285s
- better energy efficiency than the R9 285

Real pictures of USB 3.1 Type C
Source 1: linustechtips.com OP: GoodBytes
Source 2: anandtech.com
- USB 3.1 spec improvements:
- peak throughput goes to 10Gbps from the 5gbps of 3.0
- translates to a peak of 1.25GB/s
- USB power delivery 2.0 makes it possible to supply up to 100 watts
- USB PD2.0 also allows power to go both ways without changing the direction of the cable - laptop could both send and receive power through the same port
- USB type C allows for video and audio data to send over USB
- can even send PCI-E data through the connector eg. using USB type C as the connector for a two-in-one convertible tablet
- from the Anandtech article: “This opens up the possibility for a dock scenario where a single cable to the monitor can charge a laptop and also mirror the laptop's display onto the external monitor, and the external monitor would also be able to serve as a USB hub for a keyboard, mouse, headsets, flash drives, and other USB peripherals. While the laptop charging aspect and integrated USB hub in display wasn't demonstrated in the prototype I saw, everything else was fully working as shown in the photo above.”

Apple trims iCloud storage prices and adds more capacity
Source 1: linustechtips.com OP: Dietrichw
Source 2: cnet.com
- top level now offers 1TB of online storage for 19.99 USD or 14.99 GBP
- other levels available:
- 5GB is free
- 20GB 0.99 USD or 79p per month
- 200GB 3.99 USD or 2.99 GBP per month
- 500 GB 9.99 USD or 6.99 GBP per month
- still not the best deal in terms of online storage - Google Drive offers 15GB free storage and charges $9.99 per month for 1TB
- nice to see them improving
- is it just a publicity stunt/apology in reaction to “The Fappening"?

Apple’s new NFC payment method
Source 1: linustechtips.com OP: Rafy
Source 2: engadget.com
- Apple has finally stopped resisting the inclusion of NFC in iPhones
- new system is called Apple Pay (very creative)
- included in both the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, can use the iWatch to pay
- uses NFC, Touch ID, and a Secure Element chip to protect your secure info
- can suspend payments if your phone is lost with Find my iPhone without the need to make a phone call
- Apple doesn’t track what you’re buying, and cashiers don’t see your information
- one-time payment number and a dynamic security code completes the transactions
- at launch American Express, MasterCard, and Visa are all on board
- Banks on board (US): Bank of America, Chase, Citi, Wells Fargo, etc.
- retailers: Apple Store, Bloomingdale’s, Macy’s, Walgreens, Subway, McDonald’s, Whole Foods, and “many more”
- web shopping “there's a one-touch feature that replaces the need to manually enter a card number, shipping address and other info”
- again, no info is shared with merchants
- will become available for iPhone 5, 5c, and 5s with a free update to iOS8 in October

Warner Brothers may be making a Steam competitor - have they learned from Ubisoft and EA?
Source 1: linustechtips.com OP: Tro
Source 2: pcgamer.com
Source 3: escapistmagazine.com
- rumor is that it is to be called “WB Play”
- WB recently filed a trademark for something called “WB Play”
- from trademark filings: “Online retail store services featuring virtual social goods within games; electronic commerce services, namely, providing information about video game and computer game software products via telecommunication networks for advertising and sales purposes… on-line retail store services featuring downloadable sound, music, image, video and game files.”
- on ShadowofMordor.com, there is a “WB Play” logo in the upper-left corner of the screen
- appears to be the header of a drop-down, but right now it doesn’t do anything
- trademark filing also covers “audio and video broadcasting services over the internet or other communication networks”
- may be trying to get into the game streaming game
- Shadow of Mordor launches September 30
- possible we would see something before then

BBC says ISPs should assume that heavy VPN users are pirates
Source 1: linustechtips.com OP: Johners
Source 2: torrentfreak.com
- Due to british TV becoming popular overseas the BBC is trying to cut down on piracy in other countries.
- The BBC wants to put pressure on ISPs to deal with their customers.
- Sanctions could lead to throttling a users internet connection but not totally disconnecting them (for now).
- The BBC says VPNs and proxy servers amplify the piracy problem.
- The BBC wants ISPs to identify users that show suspicious behaviour. (Which would include downloading high volumes of data through a VPN).
- The BBC also says that false positives should be avoided in order to protect consumer rights.
- There is a proposal to allow injunctions to be modified after they are issued to stop sites circumventing bans.
- ISPs don’t want to pay for any of this to happen. They say the BBC should fund this and the BBC says the cost should be shared.

Moto 360 performs poorly against competition in benchmarks
Source 1: linustechtips.com OP: Zanduh
Source 2: arstechnica.com
- arstechnica calls the 360 “beautiful outside, ugly inside”
- Android Wear looks much better on a round screen
- uses a 1GHz single-core Texas Instruments OMAP 3 SoC
- 2010-era processor in the same league as the iPhone 4 or Nexus One
- questionable choice at best
- Ron Amadeo from arstechnica says “Smartwatch processors don’t need to be as powerful as their smartphone companions, but there is no reason for them to be old”
- Motorola has been very quiet about the choice of SoC
- spec list only says “TI OMAP 3” with no model number or clock speed
- /proc/cpuinfo readout is obfuscated, listing hardware only as “Minnow,” the Moto 360’s codename
- OMAP 3s are built on 45nm, huge power-usage disadvantage compared to the 28nm low power process used to make the Snapdragon 400 (processor in every other smartwatch)
- the SoC selection “completely cripples the Moto 360”
- device is slow, battery not up to par. scrolling performance is nowhere near as smooth as G watch or Gear Live
- often freezes/stutters
- in arstechnica’s heavy usage battery test (Google Hangouts message to the watch every 15 seconds, uses ADB over Bluetooth to turn the screen on every 15 seconds, all details in article) Moto 360 gets 219 minutes of battery life, which Gear live gets 390, and G watch 470
- cool watch and definitely more fashionable than most smartwatches, but the performance and battery life are both fairly horrid

Samsung Gear Blink - a potential rival for Google Glass (RUMOR)
Source 1: linustechtips.com OP: Nineshadow
Source 2: tomsguide.com
(VR keyboard patent pictures in source 2)
- It may feature a VR keyboard that turns your hands into the keyboard.
- Patent images show both one and two handed versions of this keyboard.
- May include a micro usb port for charging.
- Rumoured to launch next spring (with S6?)
- Nothing official has been said about the headset.

(last week never covered) NVIDIA starts legal battle with Samsung and Qualcomm over patent infringement
Source 1: linustechtips.com OP: brownninja97
Source 2: techpowerup.com
- awesome thread title
- NVIDIA claims Samsung and Qualcomm are both infringing on NVIDIA GPU patents
- cover technology including programmable shading, unified shaders, and multithreaded parallel processing
- identified Samsung products include Galaxy note edge, Galaxy Note 4, Galaxy S5, Galaxy Note 3, Galaxy S4, Galaxy Tab S, Galaxy Note Pro, Galaxy Tab 2, and Samsung Exynos mobile chips
- identified Snapdragon products include Snapdragon S4, 400, 600, 800, 801, and 805
- NVIDIA co-founder and CEO Jen-Hsun Huang said “As the world leader in visual comuting, NVIDIA has invented technologies that are vital to mobile computing… ...Our patented GPU inventions provide significant value to mobile devices. Samsung and Qualcomm have chosen to use these in their products without a license from us. We are asking the courts to determine infringement of NVIDIA’s GPU patents by all graphics architectures used in Samsung’s mobile products and to establish their licensing value.”
- so, NVIDIA is essentially bringing the legitimacy of Samsungs entire line of mobile products into question
- court proceedings are said to start as early as January
- NVIDIA is pursuing action by the International Trade Commission and in the U.S. District Court in Delaware

(last week never covered) New fabric circuit boards which can be cut, stretched, washed, wrinkled, and even shot
Source 1: linustechtips.com OP: Ethnod
Source 2: wired.com
- created by a team of engineers at Hong Kong Polytechnic University
- the fabric is knitted with wiring that can be worn and washed
- this fabric could host a number of biometric monitoring devices
- could be especially useful for law enforcement and military personnel
- not the world’s first computerized fabric but it might be the most durable
- a paper in Proceedings of the Royal Society from Sept 3 noted that the fabric can withstand being stretched, folded, washed, wrinkled, and shot with bullets (note - the material is not bulletproof, it was under kevlar)
- fabric made it through a million cycles of a gauntlet of stretching, shearing, and folding before it began to lose its electrical capabilities
- washed 30 samples 30 times in warm water, only 6 had noticeable drops in performance
- subsequent results were improved by using a more delicate wash cycle or by placing the fabric in a protective mesh bag
- when placed under a kevlar vest, the material was able to withstand the strain of the bullet’s impact
- all sensors were able to receive and transmit electrical signals after being shot

Rapid Fire
Five million gmail accounts and passwords leaked - mainly users based in Russia
Source 1: linustechtips.com OP: Ethnod
Source 2: isleaked.com
Source 3: engadget.com
- Passwords posted by a Russian Bitcoin Forum member.
- Google says passwords were found by phishing attacks and and hacking users. Many of the passwords were old.
- No Google server was breached

App that could help diagnose Parkinsons disease
Source 1: linustechtips.com OP: Ethnod
Source 2: bbc.co.uk
- Parkinsons symptoms are difficult to objectively measure outside the doctors office.
- New app will assess patients movement and speech.
- Parkinsons is one of the most common neurodegenerative diseases.
- Voice changing is an early symptom.
- Using machine learning they can separate those with and without with up to 99% agreement with neurologist diagnosis.
- Western population is aging and 2-3% of people over the age of 75 will develop Parkinson's
- Dr Little is also seeking 2,500 people with or without Parkinson's to participate in a study with the University of Rochester Medical Center in New York. Participants download an app to their smartphone and complete a range of active and passive tests of voice, gait and dexterity.

New method of storage which is an improvement over current HDDs
Source 1: linustechtips.com OP: sharif
Source 2: engadget.com
- New type of memory called racetrack memory.
- a series of tiny magnets, all built one atomic layer at a time by Parkin's team, that can be moved up and down along a (figurative) racetrack "in a highly coherent fashion" with the application of a simple current.
- guarantees increased read/write speeds, but it's also cheaper to produce, is incredibly resilient due to the lack of moving parts and boosts storage capacity significantly
- when applied to flash, could increase storage capacity by a factor of 100

HGST announces 10TB HDD for data centers
Source 1: linustechtips.com OP: looney
- The 10TB model will have a 12Gbit/s sas interface and 128MB cache.
- HelioSeal technology fills the drives with helium to reduce the heat developed by air-resistance within the drive
- They use a storage technology called shingled magnetic recording (SMR), in which data fields on a platters partially overlap.
- Seagate says this will allow them to produce 20+ TB hdds around 2020.

Kim Dotcom will receive a clone of all Megaupload data
Source 1: linustechtips.com OP: Johners
Source 2: neowin.net
- Initial raid in 2012.
- He will get all clones back unencrypted.
- A victory for the users of mega upload who had their legitimate data taken.

Protip: Introduce your damn guest !

I'm 10 min into the WAN show and you still haven't introduced your guest-host. I know he's your brother because I watched last week's WAN show, but not everybody watches every episode.

No hate, just some constructive criticism.

I'm frustrated that people don't point out the fact that Note 4's battery is easily swappable.

At this point it's one of very few 'flagships' that does that and it's something I care a great deal about, but apparently the vast majority of people ( people who call themselves 'enthusiast' no less) don't.
