How can I use a router to ....

DeViLzzz

How can I use a router to connect wireless to another wireless router so I can get internet on my pcs, Xbox 360 & PS3 (not sure if that console also has built in wi-fi)? I can't put in any money to get wireless network adapters/cards for my pcs nor can I get the adapter for my Xbox 360 fat. I am trying to share internet with my brother now to save some money & I was able to connect with the Wii U as I remembered the password for his wi-fi but can I grab any information from the Wii U that would let me set up internet for the rest of my devices? I haven't seen him since we decided to share internet so trying to figure this out on my own. Heck I have no phone til I figure this out as it's voip.

Wireless bridging. Check if your router can run Tomato or DDWRT, it makes it a lot easier.

My router is running something different. It's running DDWRT. Does it matter what his router is running? Also do you have any links to information on this? I will search and already did a bit but you sound like you know what you are talking about so.

I don't think it does matter what his is running, as long as you're running DDWRT, should be golden. Though there is a chance that is not the case.

Check the DDWRT wiki, it should explain it if the explanations in the router page itself are not good enough (they usually are)

And I have no idea what I'm talking about, I've only ever made a bridge with a laptop and an Xbox before, but I have an approximate knowledge of many things, so I know it can be done.

have at it http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Wireless_Bridge

The infographic seems quite useful, albeit very old.

What information do I need from my brother's router to make this work? I saw various things mentioned in the two videos I watched but I'm a bit uncomfortable not knowing exactly all the info. I need to ask for. I'm worried he is going to be annoyed.

Update:

Figured out from a video what I need to get from him and will run it by you people to see if I missed anything.

1. Gateway from his router.

2. Wireless Network Name (SSID)

3. Wireless Channel

4. I need to know wireless security settings from his router.

Told him to disable the firewall on his router.

So I think I covered everything I need to get from him but again did I miss anything?

Well I bricked the router somehow doing this so I will have to get the proper D-Link Firmware Image to fix my router. I'm going to have to get my brother or someone else to put it on media or a flash drive.  This whole process has really sucked.  Worst is using the Wii U to post on here about this crap.

How did you brick the router?

Can you go through, step by step, what you were doing? I thought you said earlier in the thread that you already had DD-WRT on the router? You should generally only be able to brick a router during a firmware update, not during actual configuration of settings. At worst, a reset using the reset button should be sufficient.

FYI it looks like you have all the correct info that you'll need to gather.

Well all I know is I could not get into DD-WRT settings on the router any longer so I'm just happy to be able to have a shot at saving this router. As for step by step of what I did well things went bad early on. I went to the updated Wiki and followed the video and while I was able to enter settings and save them it kept ending up on a blank white screen at times instead of showing the gui and I hit refresh and eventually that didn't send it back to the gui. First thing I did was reset to factory default settings like it said in the video. Does that erase DD-WRT? Thing is when I went on it showed DD-WRT so I say no. When I got to the step where I switched DHCP Server to disabled and applied and saved I couldn't do another thing again in DD-WRT.

I'm also beginning to think based on what I read with me having VOIP phone service what I would have had to do to my particular router would have made it impossible to use my phone service any longer. It requires a port I'd be killing with this mod. Also I believe with my particular router I can only do one of the mods mentioned making this pointless. I put the cart before the horse in all this and disconnected my internet stupidly before being sure everything would work using this method. Hopefully my internet provider who said they'd be on the hook for 15 days still (They use Cogeco's lines) might be able to hook me back up without an issue and we both would be happy.

Update: ... and like the usual awesome internet service provider,Start Communications, is they go the extra mile to help me and saved me a re-hook up fee and more.  Meanwhile over the next many months I will learn more about what I was trying to do.
