Is it possible to update a Mobo bios without a "supported" CPU?

Go to solution Solved by PhantomChevron,

I don't think so, ask a friend to borrow one if they have

I feel like this is a stupid question, as I can't seem to find any answer for this (Or anyone asking this question, for that matter). I'm going to be buying this Motherboard/CPU combo, but, most Z87 boards aren't compatible with Haswell Refresh CPUs without a bios update. Unfortunately this one is no different. I don't have a CPU laying around that would be compatible with this Motherboard (The one I'm currently using is a i7 920), so my question is: Will I be able to put the Haswell Refresh CPU in, turn on my PC and have enough functionality to update my bios?

Well that's a little disappointing. Oh well, thanks for the super fast response, and I'm so glad I came here before buying it lol. That would have been disastrous.

Edit: Thankfully the z97 version of this Motherboard also has a combo deal, and with the unlocked version of the same CPU, just a bit more expensive.

You can update most new motherboards without a CPU in the socket. So, check the manufacturer's website or customer care before committing to purchase the expensive combo deal.

@RockyGateway

that case only applies to the higher grade Asus boards and the ROG line

@RockyGateway

After reading this I did some googling and found that MSI is apparently good about updating their older boards bios (Though I would have to assume that every company does this) so it likely wouldn't be an issue, but I'd rather not take the risk of getting one that was stuck somewhere in the back of the warehouse for a long time and is running an older bios lol. I am, however, continuing my search and so far I've found z97 combos that are around the same price that I think I'm going to go with. They're entry-level motherboards, but I really wouldn't use any of the bells and whistles of a high-end motherboard anyways.

Thanks for the responses, though, everyone. I dunno if I can, but I'm going to attempt to mark more than 1 post in here as an answer.

I think it's confirmed refresh/dc CPUs won't boot without a BIOS (sometimes unsupported ones do, e.g. I had a wolfdale e7300 working on a conroe bios but it was stuck at 1.1ghz and had no l2 cache recognized).

ASUS have a flashback utility.
