phanteks evolv release

bbqsauce

I am doing my next build in the Evolv, I have never used all the expansion slots on an Atx motherboard and I am tired of Multi-gpu (I have had enough problems with it that I am going with single card from now on), also I hate how much space is wasted in most cases on hard drive cages that I will never use. The Evolv has the removable cage in the bottom, the ssd mounts behind the motherboard and the mounting plate in the front. I will probably use the ssd mount behind the mobo tray and the bottom hard drive cage and take out the plate in the front. For the first time I will also have things like cable management behind the motherboard tray and a bottom mounted psu.

All the wasted space and only using a single graphics card is why I stick to matx. If I would have known itx boards would have gotten better when I built this system, I may have gone that route instead.  At the most, I'll upgrade to a beast graphics card in the next gen and maybe get a 2TB HDD to add to my 1TB and 120GB SSD. I don't really need much beyond that.

I saw this case and even had some hands-on time with it here at Gamescom in Cologne. Out of the hundreds of booths there is a single one abt PC components and I stumbled upon it by accident. It's the booth of an online-retailer (Caseking), so several manufacturer are displayed. If they have it, it should be available very soon. In Germany at least.

Feedback: I'm still pissed at the Side "front" I/O panel, but other than that, in short:
+: the panels are thick (0,4cm) and heavy. I never touched something that appeared to be made of such nice materials. Positively surprized I was.
-: The front intake and top exhaust will make even just decent airflow hard. The fans will be starving for air or fighting to get the heat out on top, as the smalls vents really are tiny. They seem insufficient to me and I fear a potential heat issue. But maybe it's just an impression. I hope so.

Would you like me to take some pictures ? I'm here all week. It's the black version.

Oh hell yeah.

Phanteks seems pretty good about nicking good ideas from other manufacturers (I'm waiting for them to steal the permanent centre standoff from Corsair), so I'm kind of surprised they did that with the side panel. Surely they learnt from Bitfenix's error with the Prodigy, as the side panels were ridiculous to close.

Yeah I was wondering about the airflow. The front panel seems about as restrictive as the Corsair Obsidian lineup.

Done. I'll upload them this evening when I get back to the hotel.

Btw, all the panels are a breeze to take off and it somehow feels pleasant. It appears to be magnetic or hinged.

Also, of course cable mgt space is generous, but these preinstalled re-useable things are fantastic.

Yeah, I think it uses some hinges like CaseLabs.

Here is a very brief overview-video of the Evolv filmed there by a German media. The presenter is from the retailer, not the manufacturer. As an availability date, he only mentions autumn. And "no pricing yet".

So the front and top is all aluminum?

Yes, except for the black plastic "fins" at both ends of the top panel.

Thanks for the pics! A few questions.. What does the "fins" do? Does the case attracts fingerprints? How's the airflow of this case? Is the quality of the dust filter good? Does the front supports 2 140mm fans? Thanks!

I don't know what they do... Fingerprints can been seen, on the black version at least. As mentionned ealier, the airflow seems to be quite restricted in the front and top. Dual 140mm is supported in the front and the top, but for the front a 200 white fan is pre-mounted :)

HOLY CRAP, THE SIDE PANELS ARE HINGED !!!???!!!  :o

Thanks for posting those pics. If I recall the side panels are not magnetic but snap on similar to some Lian-li designs out there. I don't know if the hinge is for the display model or not. I like the dust filters, they look like they have a very fine mesh.

Does the top have foam in it for noise dampening? Also is the finish glossy or matte?/Does it look easy to clean?

If you don't know the Enthoo Pro you should probably find Linus' or Hardware Canuck's video on it.

If memory serves me right, Linus' summary of that was something along the lines of, "If you have $120 to spend on a case, you should basically buy an Enthoo Pro", it's pretty damn good value for money

It's the top and front panels that gave a magnetic impression, maybe I mistyped earlier.

All the surfaces are completely matt. 0 foam however. It would have made temps even worse than what they are likely to become. On the other hand, the panels are quite thick at an estimated 0,4mm and feel lovely. My philosophy is always to select quiet components and have the least amount of fans, so I don't see the lack of this of this feature as a drawback at all :)

I do and they don't mention a lot. It's a very superficial presentation. We will learn a lot more by watching the

. He even says that the case has no 5,25" bay, which is false (the slot is in the back, above the rear exhaust). Just the release date that I mentioned a few posts ago ("Autumn 2014").

K, thanks for responding to that. I must have seen that video you linked at least 50 times by now, but I still have fun watching it.
