Xonar DG vs Xonar Essence ST

My computer is still a work in progress and I want to decked out with all the toys i can put into it.

 

My motherboard has a legacy PCI slot that i'd like to put to good use.

 

So i thought maybe an Asus PCI sound card would be nice.

 

I've been reading all reviews on the DG and the Essence ST. I was wondering is there a major difference between the 2 besides the price? Is there a wide performance margin? Will i need some nice speakers and headphones to notice the difference?

 

I spend 50/50 time on gaming and media. Also 75/25 on speakers/headphones.

Both are pointless and wasteful and solve nothing.
