You could get an adapter (not sure if it will fit inside the mac)

There are IDE ssds http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20World%20Computing/SSDMLP060/?utm_source=google&utm_medium=shoppingengine&utm_campaign=googlebase&gclid=CNGN7PzX278CFUVo7AodkW8Afg

but honestly I am not sure its worth investing in

OK thanks. I'll just stick with the normal 60gb HD. I won't be using the iMac for actual work

Well, I would try an IDE SSD and see what happens. If you don't like it, simply return it.

this is probably the only place i'll hang out anymore: http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/274320-the-long-awaited-car-thread/

First I have to get money, then the iMac, then more money, then the ssd

Yeah basically IDE is such a slow interface that there will be little benefit. A cool thought experiment though. If you have the money and want to do it just for fun, then definitely give it a shot.

However, what version of Mac OS does the G4 support? Does that version even support TRIM? If not, you're actually going to have a far worse experience after a few weeks or months, because without TRIM, the SSD will basically fill itself up and performance will get worse and worse. Basically without the TRIM command being sent, the SSD won't know that it's OK to erase a file. This is because the SSD controller has an abstract software layer that works as a "middle man" between the physical NAND flash inside the SSD, and the Operating System controlling it.

Edit:

According to Wikipedia, OS X 10.6.8 is when TRIM was first introduced to the Mac Ecosystem. The Mac G4 is a PowerMac system, and therefore utilizes the PowerPC processor architecture, and therefore doesn't support anything newer than OS X 10.4.11 or Mac OS 9.2.2:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trim_%28computing%29#Operating_system_support

So yeah without TRIM support, your SSD performance will degrade rapidly (Less so if used sparingly but eventually it'll get bad). I'm unsure if there is any way to get around not having TRIM on Mac OS X 10.6.8 or Mac OS 9.2.2. Perhaps a Mac user can help you there.
