Betting on E-sports games

Juggernautilus

Hi, I wanted to start a discussion about betting on E-sports games such as League of Legends.

As you may have known, League of Legends has weekly organized professional games a.ka. LCS (you can check out about it here http://eune.lolesports.com/). I watch almost all games and I know teams strenghts pretty well.

Today, I found out that you can bet on these games on sites such as https://www.pinnaclesports.com/ I wanted to know your opinion about betting on E-sport games. I read a lot of reviews about this site and it seems legit. (though you can't bet from USA) It takes only around 4% fee on e-sport bets.

I want my first deposit to be about 15 euros (the amount I can affor to lose) and bet around 1 euro per game. I don't want to earn money from betting (wouldn't complain if I would), my main reason is to make the games more interesting and a reason to research on teams and so.

My only betting experience has been with http://csgolounge.com/ where I lost around 15 dollars worth of skins gradually. I didn't know much about CS:GO teams back then and I put a lot of, so called, yolo bets hoping for high rewards. I learned to not bet big on 90-10 games and not risking much on the underdogs.

What's your opinion? Should I start just for the sake of trying how it is? Any advice on betting?

I've actully won about 5 bucks in skins on lounge and i am quite addicted to it. I dont know how I feel about betting IRL money on a game just partly because whats stoping players from betting on the other team and throwing??

LCS is pretty professional and I doubt anyone would throw a game that might decide their career for a single bet. There have been some incidents where a CS:GO game was re-broadcasted and the players already knew the outcome so they bet their best skins on the winner.

I know that Pinnacle is pretty well known. It has even sponsored Dota2 tournaments in the past. Betting on E-Sports in general isn't that different than betting on entertainment like realitytv shows or such. Companies that work in Nordics (office being in countries with no or lower laws on gambling) have been doing that pretty long already.

$5 I'm not the only one that doesn't care about e-sports and/or betting.

Is that really a stretch?

Considering people can't even agree what real sport then like or care about does it surprise you not everyone cares about esports or betting?

E-sports compared to general athletic sports varies a lot. If it´s a battle between the first five ranked teams in the league the result is very random due to the ability of game turn-arounds made by the players or the mini mistakes that lead from a win to a lose.

It´s easier to get an idea of a football match score than a LoL, CS, SC2, or even DotA´s ending score ( also W or L).

So I wouldn´t risk my money on e-sports if it´s not a game between a top tier & and a lower tier, where you have like 80% win chance. (even if the ratio might be small, just push heavy money)

PS: OFFTOPIC: I used to bet a lot on tenis / football. Part of summer winnings 256€. (pushed around 100€)

Yeah true. In football there is almost no chance a 4-0 can turn around in last 10 minutes of the second half but in LoL and DotA there is a high chance of throwing the game if you make a crucial mistake. That's why I see CS:GO as the next leading e-sport (if Valve starts to support events somehow) because it has an actual score and it's easier to tell which team is ahead and much more spectator friendly.

In sc1 korea there was match fixing where players either bet against themselves or were paid by gambling sites to throw, ruining their sc careers, so it does happen.

It's happened more recently over there with League of Legends, coaches taking advantages of players etc.

I dunno, I'm not much of a gambling man anyway, but I guess theres a market for it, or people wouldn't do it. If I had to bet on MMA vs. Snute Game 3 from Gfinity, where on multiple occasions the casters were saying one player or the other was screwed..... not gonna happen.

Yeah true. In football there is almost no chance a 4-0 can turn around in last 10 minutes of the second half but in LoL and DotA there is a high chance of throwing the game if you make a crucial mistake.

Again, refer to above statement. Although, that being said if you know the players well enough, you can kind of gauge sometimes whether or not a player is inclined to make mistakes. Lets take the recent-ish GSL final between Classic and soO. Personally, I'd have voted on soO, because I'd seen Classic make shit tonnes of really stupid mistakes in Proleague. Classic won anyway, but thats not the point. You can gauge, sometimes, the likelihood of a player making a mistake in a high pressure match.

I bet a $26 dollar value on NetcodeGuides on Monday and won a $9 AWP, i will definitely be betting on the cologne matches .

And as advice I would say don' try to go for the big score all the time, for example don't bet max value on a team that only has a 13% chance of winning just for the chance of getting a several hundred dollar prize.  make bets that give a potential of around 10 to 20 dollars return.  Because remember you can make several bets at a time.

It'll be the Koreans again this year. We'll see how the scene reacts when they realize it's going to be Korea/China dominating eSports. SC2 has been out for what, 4 years now? And it's not been until very recently that there started to be "foreigners" who could stand up to big name Protoss players

imo Korea is the best region but they are way too hyped up, C9 and Alliance has a decent chance too
