Intel CPU upgrade suggestions

Hey everyone, I am currently using an AMD 8120 at 4.5 GHz (specs in the signature) but it's time to upgrade. I am looking to go for an Intel as I am having such low performance in gaming. This will be mainly a gaming PC with the occasional video encoding once in a while. I've been looking at the 4790k and 4930k. Since the 4790k is cheaper, I will be using the money difference to buy another GTX 780 soon after the CPU upgrade. Which will be a better option? A 4790k or a 4930k? Thank you for your suggestions.

Core i5-4670K/4690K, Core i7 is pointless if you mostly will be gaming. If you were going to be encoding all of the time then I would recommend Core i7-4790K or 4930K or even a 3930K if you can get a good deal on one.

the 4790k looks like the best option for you. x79 isn't much use unless you need a 6 core or more than 2 gpu's. a 4790k with a nice cooler and sli 780's will be a great match.

FX 8320.

This, very simple upgrade if your motherboard supports it and its on-par with the i5 in most games.

I have seen a lot of benchmarks online and not even the 9590 comes close to the 4770k in gaming which is why I want to move away from AMD. My board supports it. I have a ROG Crosshair V Formula Z board. I will be doing a lot of map compiling on the source engine which does require a lot of power.

That board supports Vishera, the FX 8320 is not slow, it is close to i5 in the majority of tasks and better in most work loads.

What do you mean your board supports it, Intel won't fit on an AMD board mate unless I've misunderstood something.

I was replying to Recon. He said I should get 8320 if my board supports it.

Just out of curiosity, why is no one recommending the 4790k? or 4770k

you're going to have to get a new board for an i7

its not really much of an upgrade. 10% ipc might be ok for things like crysis and bf4, but things that aren't gpu limited like the video encoding would benefit more from an i7.

Just grab the 4770 or 4790 K SKU CPU's, and this?

Because you said the majority of the time you would be gaming not encoding all the time.

Ahh my apologies and about the Core i7, in games HT has little to no gain in performance over a Core i5 though when it comes to encoding the HT really helps and also more cores (Core i7-3930K/4930K). Since you said 'mainly gaming' and 'occasional video encoding' I would recommend the non-HT Core i5-4670/4690K because it is cheaper than the Core i7 yet in games performs the same. When it comes to encoding video, OK the Core i7 would perform the best but the Core i5 wouldn't be shit mate.

Don't get me wrong, the Core i7 is a good CPU.

I'm going to keep the red/black color scheme from my current system. The big down side of that Gigabyte board is that it only has 6 sata ports. I have 5 drives currently and will definitely get more in the future. I was looking at the ROG Hero and the 4790k for the new build. How's that sound?

sounds good, but i would get a lower end board and a 4 bay nas to put some of your drives in

Can I ask the reason behind you going for a lower end board? I guess as long as I can get a board that has 8 x SATA and 2x 16xPCIE3 slots, that should be enough for me. (that is the bad side about the Hero, it only has 1x 16xPCIE but I have to make some compromises)

a lower end board will still look and perform the same unless you like very high overclocking. you can always get a pcie card will more sata ports on in the future if you run out, but the reason i suggested a nas is because all those hdd's in a case obstruct airflow and create more heat, so your pc would run cooler if you put them somewhere else. just keep a ssd and your main hdd in the case, so that you can access the data you use most faster.

Ah yeah it makes sense. Could you be able to suggest some Z97 motherboards? Preferably red/black (not a big deal) but I prefer 8 Sata ports.
