They took the Wii network down like a month ago...

Edit: Never mind, they're taking it offline in May.

Wait a sec! What happens with the games that people digitally downloaded? Can they no longer download them? I know that my son's step mom has a Nintendo Wii and buys stuff from the store and I want to let her know what the deal is with that now and if anything bad is coming in the future that is known.

Too many ****ing games!  Back log 4 life! :S

The Nintendo Wii network is using GameSpy server and system.

Sadly, the company is shutting down. Therefor, pretty much the entire Wii network is shutting down as well.

That is the problem when you are dependent on others.

For the WiiU, Nintendo decided to build its own network from the ground up, which is a better decision for them, as it allows better integration with the console, which makes online play much simpler, faster and better. In addition, Nintendo has complete control, and doesn't need to pay service fees to another company. This allowed for for in game purchases, patches for game being sent out, purchase games online, DLC support, session pass support, forum system, etc.. all of which were lacking on the Wii console.

It also opens doors for Nintendo for online audio chat if Nintendo decided to build the infrastructure for. Nintendo doesn't want to charge additionally for it's network, nor lose money, so it will probably take time before the technology allows it to be implemented cheaply, including monitoring system (as Nintendo wants to keep family friendly environment). I say, get your phone or tablet out, and just do a group skype conversation or what ever you prefer to use, and it will be better in any case, if you really want voice chat in games. That's what I do on my PC. All the games that support it, have lower than phone line quality.

Awe, my wife is wanting that game so bad. The games we have so far are Mario 3D world,Super Mario world , all the wiiU sports Club games and Assassins Creed -Black Flag, my wife and I enjoy it a lot more on the PC though, the Wii U game pad makes the game extremely hard to control :(

This is one of the reasons why I hate consoles.

At least Quake/Doom still work on my PC.
