Fan Controller Issues

But shouldn't they work on 5v after then?

No, because it seems like they need more than 5v to keep spinning...

Hi guys,

I need some help. I have a arc mini r2. I have bought 2 akasa apache fans for it, which i have installed in the front. The controller on the case has only 3 pins, but I was still able to connect them using 3 pin extensions. I have also connected 2 stock fans to the controller.

I have a strange issue.  When starting my computer up on 5v, the Akasa fans don't spin, but all the other fans work fine.  However, if I move the controller setting to 12V, they start working and can then move it down to 7v and they work too.  However, when I select 5v again both Akasa fans stop working.  But all other fans work fine through out all the volts.  To get them to work again I have to select 12v again and then move them down to 7v. What could be the problem?

Thanks for your advice.

Maybe they just don't start until a certain voltage.

How long do you have them yet? Maybe they just need to break in.

who cares...

High starting voltage, a problem with some fans.

PWM control is different as it rapidly sends a 12v current to the fans, timing it so that the fan maintains the intended RPM.

Oh I see, makes sense.  They are quite powerful fans.

Yeah they should. Only really bad fans don't run at 5V. I'd suggest to break them in for some more time.

Powerful fans have a much higher minimum voltage than low CFM quiet fans, so you're probably right.

Just had a reply from Akasa Tech Support.  You are correct, The fans need 7v to start spinning.  12v is rated voltage.
