Worth the Uprgade?

Good Morning All,

 

Wanted the board's opinion on this...

 

My i5-8600k is acting up. Luckily I purchased the extended warranty via MicroCenter and can return it for the full purchase price ($230 +tax). Should i just swap it out for another i5-8600k or upgrade to the new i7-9700k? The cost difference would be about $160.

BSOD 3-4 times a day...I swapped in another i5-8600k from my buddy's old build that he's not using anymore and I didn't have one BSOD over the week that I used it. MicroCenter has a nice no question asked return policy if you have the extended warranty so instead of messing around with it, I will just use the warranty I paid for. I don't mind dropping some $$ for a new processor anyway just wondering if the $$ jump from the i5-8600k to the i7-9700k would be worth it.

If you're certain the processor is to blame then getting another i5 would be fine. Don't bother getting an i7 unless you are seeing a performance deficit and need more CPU horsepower.

What else would you use that $160 for?  If it isn't gonna do anything else for you then I'd grab me a 9700K.

Do you do production based stuff?
If you just game, the i5 is better.

Make sure your blue screens aren't happening due to memory... either ways the i7 9700K is better obviously but whether you'll take advantage of this better depends on your GPU and workloads beyond gaming.

on a serious note, i'd just swap for another 8600k? (mine is also just sitting around), if you spend the extra for a 9700k it's gonna be pretty bad relatively when zen 2 comes out (and 9900k might drop in price then to 400dollars, 6 months.
