should i be able to use this card on a 450 watt psu with a i3 6100.

Yep, I ran an i5 and 980 Ti off a Corsair CX450M, you'll be fine with a 970 and i3 so long as your PSU is a quality unit.

Which "450W" PSU do you have?

If it's a decent quality one, it should be okay.

 

Keep in mind this GTX 970 uses a PCI-E 6-pin AND a PCI-E 8-pin power connector. They are required NOT optional.

The EVGA 450BT will do okay -- not the best quality unit, but adequate.

I would recommend that you get a better PSU, but that is if your current budget allows.

 

Anyways, EVGA 450BT has two (2) PCI-E 6+2 power connectors for the video card(s).

6+2, so it can either work as a 6-pin or an 8-pin.

As mentioned before, the GTX 970 you are looking at uses a 6-pin + 8-pin, so you should be good to go.

 

The 450W (spec sheet on EVGA's website indicates the +12v rail can supply up to 430W) should be okay for your relatively low-power draw system.

i ended up picking up a 970 asus strix. Once i pick up a new motherboard im going to get a 750 watt psu. Thanks for the advice!

Ah okay.

You don't need a 750W PSU -- you can run a complete system with TWO GTX 970's with a 750W.

A Quality 450W ~ 550W will be plenty.

Actually my plan is to pick up a second 970 for sli.

SLI GTX 970 at this time??

That is not worth it; you a better off getting a single better card when the performance of a GTX 970 is not enough.

1. You do not get perfect 100% scaling in multi-GPU set-ups
2. Games are gradually dropping support for Crossfire/SLI
3. Power consumption will be higher vs a single card that can give equivalent performance of GTX 970 in SLI

Additionally, you will also need a new motherboard that supports SLI, as your current MSi H110M Gaming does not.

Your i3-6100 is also going to bottleneck the performance of two GTX 970's in SLI.

yeah im still on the fence on if i should do sli.
