Posted November 19, 2018 Hello! My brother wanted to upgrade their laptop's wifi card so they can use my family's 5GHz band. I'm trying to figure out what these two wires do. Posted November 20, 2018 They're the antennas. If you put in a mimo type of card then your performance will be halved since one it the streams doesn't have sufficient signal strength. Basically, one laptop has 2 antenna, while the other only has 1 antenna. You could theoretically improve the performance / enable 5GHz connectivity on the laptop with 2 antenna by purchasing a compatible mini-PCI laptop WiFi card (unless it's an HP laptop that uses a whitelist to prevent any "unauthorized" cards from working) but I wouldn't bother with the laptop that only has 1 antenna since you really won't see much improvement.
