Help, Sudden Unstable OC?!

does it work if you use fixed again? tbh adaptive is better when it comes to saving power, but turning it off is even better.

Well I have a horror story to tell you first.

 

I have built this system in May of 2017. New first build ever. (Build in sig.) Did some research on overclocking CPU, RAM, and GPU. So thought go in order of research and understanding what I've read.

 

So OC'd my CPU for an hour it took me to OC to find my max which is 5.0GHZ on an 7700K with a voltage of 1.33V on FIXED voltage. So now that I found max OC I switched to adaptive. (This is where I get confused, EVGA bios I guess) On adaptive it is set to 1.305V with a +25 offset = 1.33v. If that is correct. Also set only the offset at +80 which makes it about the same voltage as if I were to set it. This is with Arctic MX-4 thermal paste with an EVGA 280mm CLC AIO. I had solid temps at max load/100% around 65c including OCCT stress test, Intel burn test (standard and high) and cinebench (1036 score).

 

Today something scary (to me) happened during playing black ops 4. I freeze and BSOD of WHEA UNCORRECTABLE ERROR. Which I hear is unstable OC. I thought just a fluke cause I've had it OC since I built it. Some other error codes as well but all pertaining to unstable OC. As nothing else is overclocked yet cause I'm waiting on new RAM. Not worried about GPU yet, I'll do that last once everything else is good to go.

 

I'm so frustrated as of now. I've been retrying & testing my OC since 11 this morning. [EST] Temps are just took insane even with a dirty OC at 1.35V which I would like to stay at or below. Time of posting this I have set it back to default/stock and getting temps on a OCCT medium set test of 85c = failing OCCT. My CPU cooler is working fine I checked it out and made sure. I'm thinking of doing a repasting with a new thermal paste tube I just bought. "Arctic Silver 5" so it's not so watery like MX-4. Thinking thicker may spread better, was recommenced this thermal paste by a previous post about which thermal paste to get.

 

So anyone know about how adaptive works or if fixed vcore is better?

I mean overclocking is just adjusting vcore to have enough power to keep cpu temps in control and clocks stable in gaming and everyday tasks correct?

Any ideas on what to try?

Should any CPU settings be turned off?

I know this is a long read, sorry about that. Just trying to explain as much as possible.

 

Any help to fix this is greatly appreciated. Hell I'll even let you remote.

Could be silicon degredation from running at 5ghz for so long.

I mean before overclocking it I delidded it and used liquid metal. Tested it using a dirty OC 1.35v and 65C-67c highest temps over an hour on realbench.

Well, just re-edit it, remove the quotes, and put the "@" and their name. If you "@" them, you dont need to hit the reply icon

Tbh just using the CPU alone will degrade it, but 5GHz 1.33V isnt enough to make it degrade especially fast. Maybe the old voltage is just right on the line of stability?

i'm thinking the same, his offset isnt giving the same amount of voltage, even a change from 1.33 to 1.32 is enough to cause instability, and 1.33 is insanely low for 5ghz.

Yes 1.33v is exact for 5.0ghz. I'm running now on fixed voltage and ran 3 hour occt medium data and 20 minutes of linpack and no errors temps highest were 70c, just for moment though. Now we just see what happens in game. Will report back.

Yes, youre probably right adaptive I think is the problem. Either I don't know how to work it or the offsets and target are not doing what I read they should be doing. I'm now running fixed 1.33v. 5.0GHz Running aida64 while writing this and at 68c-71c. So I believe were good will report back after gaming.

 

Edit: So during gaming I had no crashes and temps were from 60c in beginning and dipped down the 56c-58c after an hour of playing. Very surprised I am. Maybe I have a better chip than I thought.

 

Thank you for you're help. Fixed/override voltage is making a major difference. From now I'll always use override.
