unraid unRAID NAS on old enterpise server

 So I am looking to get a HP Proliant or equal server to use as a NAS with Plex and a VM. There are a few questions: 1) is there a way to make the server quieter, 2) is it possible to use the P410 RAID card as a dumb input card for HDD hot swap and 3) is it even worth it? Thanks.

Turn down the fan speeds but you may need to replace them all out. Its worth it. Don't know know about number 2.

Why unraid? Id run proxmox or simmilar here. Just use the hardware raid. Proxmox is free, has better vm support and zfs for raid if you want it

 

You can put reistors on fans to make it quiet.

 

What server are you looking at?

 

Id just get a tower server or desktop here.

I was looking at a D180 G6 and I have not heard to proxmox before. More research to be done.

Oh I have one of those.

 

You can replace it with a hba if you want.

 

You can put reistors on the fans if you want it quieter.

You can't easily swap them, just solder reistors on the ram. But they are normal sized 60x60mm fans There is one connector for each pair of fans.
