ISP recognition

I was taking some tests on speedtest.net and I was wondering how does the system identify my ISP. I mean, does each ISP "own" a field of IP Addresses and you can recognize them? If that's the case, what happens if I manually change my IP to another ISP IP address through my router settings? Will it mean that I'm an "illegal" client of the new ISP and therefore get more bandwith?

Just changing your local ip address will do nothing, because all the data will still physically go through your isp. The cable that comes to your house goes to the isp, and then it goes to the speed test server.

Private users usually only have one public IP per house yes. Here you can buy more public IP's if you for example want to run a server and not use DDNS.

No.

When your parents made a deal with your ISP to use the internet, then the ISP  confirmed to take the network traffic from your physical location, and to forward it.

If you made a deal with an another isp then they would take in your traffic and use that.

What I mean is that my IP will change but the ISP name above the IP will not change. If I use VPN for a let's say German IP, my location and IP will change although I won't get a German ISP name. Right?

Yeah that was actually my mistake. Haven't tried a VPN so I didn't know. So basically, the cable that comes to my house is labeled and my ISP sends bandwith to that cable and not to my IP pool. In other words, if I change ISP then someone will come to my building and replace the old cable with a new one right ? And that's why I will have more/less bandwith, based on the ISP

It is actually your routers MAC adress that is connected to the service you have. So the router gets a Public IP and in your network you have Private IP's. The way to the internet is through your routers Private IP also called default gateway. It then routes all information to its WAN adress which is your connection to the internet.

Yes.

You can't change it. Either it's obtained automatically or it will stop working if you change it.

You will get the ISP that's providing the datacenter you VPN is in. So say I rent a VPS in California and put a VPN on it. In speed test it will say my ISP is the one in California

Yeah I actually did a few tuning on my router to check that out and it doesn't work iif I change it manually. What I get out of this, is that internet bandwith is sent over the internet switcher outside my house and not to a specific IP pool. This way, my ISP ensures that even if I get an IP address from a different ISP, I won't profit from it because bandwith is sent "physically" to my house and not "virtually" to an IP. 
Isn't that correct?

Yeah I figured that out. Tried out a VPN and it does change your ISP name, although you don't get to profit from the speeds of the ISP of course.

Bandwidth is determined by what the ISP provisions you for via a file or other form of configuration pushed down to your router or modem, depending on the connection.

Your routers MAC adress is what is usually connected to what you as a user record at the ISP will be allocated for a certain bandwidth. So if you for example pay for a higher bandwidth it is your user record that gets updated. So next time you connect you will get the new speed unless they actually have to change cables somewhere to be able to meet the new speed demand.

I actually changed from a 100Mbit connection to a 1000Mbit connection today. It was basically done in a few minutes. Need to buy a new router though since my Linksys EA6500 only has a throughput of 670Mbit :)

IP addresses are sold in blocks to providers. That information is in public domain so its easy to figure out what IP belongs to who. Thats how Netflix bans VPN's from accessing their service, because they know what IP addresses belong to VPN providers. 

 

You cant just change the IP address from your ISP. Because the IP address is assigned by a DHCP server on their network and you dont have access to that config. While you can get a static IP address from many providers, these addresses are assigned by the ISP. Changing the local address that gets assigned to your PC directly from the router has no baring on the Internet address provided by the ISP. 

 

As far as accessing an ISP goes, its the modem that get the authorization. In the case of ISP's like Comcast, you provide them with both the serial number and Mac address of the modem and that get attached to your account. Once the Mac address is authorized on the system, then the DHCP server will issue an IP address. The only way to gain access to another ISP's system would be to register your modem with that ISP. Gaining access in any other manner would be against the law. 

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.

If you are on DSL then either at the cabinet or telephone exchange you are physically or virtually (similar to how a VPN works) connected to your ISP.  That way any traffic from your modem/router only goes to your ISP.

Due to how routing works, if you tried to use a different IP address, it simply wouldn't work.  Your ISPs routers will be configured for the specific IP addresses they have assigned and traffic for another ISPs IP address would be routed out to the Internet to that ISPs routers, not back to your connection.

Okay I kinda get how it works, but for example in my case, when I changed modem and started to set it up, I automatically connected to my ISP without even mentioning that I changed. What I understand from that is that my telephone line is attached to my account and not the serial number and mac address of my modem. So basically, in the future if I change ISP, then the previous one will delete my record and the new one will add it to my account and add bandwith to this line and not to my modem.
