I agree, having some cooling wont hurt the siruation at all, but does it need dedicated cooling, not at all. I fond the fact corsair selling a dominatior platinum cooler strange tbh. any, I digress the short answer is not needed but it doesnt hurt to have some airflow in that area.

I have some old DDR 3 that's been in use since DDR 3 came into existence.  It came with a Gskill Ram Cooler.  That ram, to this day, has not faulted.  So can it benefit?  I think so, especially if you have bad airflow.  Is it worth it if you don't need it?  No.

No. DDR4 RAM doesn't consume enough power to need extra cooling.

And to this point - that Ram is in my Media Center now which is on 24/7 for the last year alone.  Let alone been transferred and used across 2+ builds.

 

So I do think they can benefit the ram, especially if you want it for the looks and have the money to spend.

Most DDR3 and DDR4 RAM don't need explicit cooling.

 

Any airflow from an active CPU heat sink, case fan, etc. is more than sufficient.

I'll be the voice of disagreement. 

The answer is it depends.

Servers airflow runs across the RAM for good reason, especially in 1U and 2U rackmounts, but I have a tower server that has a fan specifically aimed at the RAM, and when the server is running hard, the fan increases over the memory. But it is ECC Registered FBDIMMs, so absolute accuracy is a positive thing and cool RAM helps on that.

 

For a basic desktop, not really, unless you have poor airflow which can cook the RAM and bye bye to a stable system.

Nope. Unless you overclock your RAM in such way that creates a lot of heat.

If you don't OC, or just a bit (especially with newer RAM technology of today which consumes less power), you are just buy it for the looks.

In old days, not sure today, if you knew nothing about nothing, they said that it was a good indicator of decent RAM, as those looking for a budget option (no heatsink), probably look for the lowest price, and so lower quality (and timings) chips where used especially from the name brand companies. So it become popular to have something, and now beside Value RAM, they all have a metal plate of some kind. But I won't be surplussed if in reality you had crap RAM chips with a metal plate to make it look like it is fancy. But even if you needed up with crap chip, again, if you don't OC.. who cares (assuming, once again, named brand)
