windows 8.1 slowing down game performance

veer24

so basically i have a crappy laptop in which i used to have windows 10
i used it for some light games like black squad and stuff
but recently i put a magnet on my lappy and bricked the harddisk

had to get a new one and the technician installed windows 8.1

heres the real issue

i used to play games at bout 40 to 50 fps in windows 10

and it dropped to 20 ? in windows 8.1 i need help

if some additional details are required for a possible fix im happy to provide em

any help will be appreciated and spare my mistakes english is not my first language

and my dads happy with win8.1 cause win10 took bout 10 mins to boot and win8.1 takes bout 10 seconds

i was hoping for some soft fix if possible

I would have said a vm, but on a crappy laptop that isn't a sollution. what about background programs and other factors that could keep it lower? install userbenchmark and copy the link to here, with everything closed for the best results

could be something as silly as the guy who put windows 8 on didnt set the power profile from balanced to high performance. i've heard this is a big performance killer for laptops

You want to use Balance... High Performance should not be used unless the manufacture screwed up the power management system (check good reviews before buying).

When you use High Performance, the CPU loses its power saving ability, making the CPU warm, and can't Turbo Boost as much, or not even, 'causing performance issues.

That is why Microsoft is hiding the power plan options. In exchange you have the "Power Mode" slider, which changes Windows behaviors and enable/disable features to save battery life more aggressively or not.

if you want the best performance out of any computer, laptop or not, you will want to choose high performance, or even ultimate performance if u choose to unlock that hidden profile. i understand your laptop cpu gets warm when u turn on high performance BUT that doesn't mean you're NOT SUPPOSED to do that on laptops. just because whoever made the laptop put such a trash cooling system in it (i bet they didnt even put the right amount of cooling paste on the cpu) that it won't even handle switching to the high performance plan is just garbage manufacturing. the thermal paste on the cpu could have just went away over time as well.

think about it, they make gaming laptops right? u think those laptops power plans are set to balanced? fuck no. why? because they actually have cooling systems for the cpu etc in them that aren't pure trash

your cooling system is the problem. changing a setting within an operating system unless its literally overclocking (and changing the power plan to high performance is nowhere near overclocking) should not cause something to get to dangerously hot levels. take that thing in or take it apart yourself and tell them to make the cooling system not trash in it. from what it sounds like re applying some thermal paste could fix your issue but the cpu fan sounds poopy too.

i'm not trying to be rude, but if i couldnt change my power plan from balanced to high performance without my laptop overheating, someone would be answering questions really fast and if i wasn't hearing what i wanted to hear someone would be in a world of shit.

those "good reviews" you speak of.....are just laughable to me. just because people are on a camera talking about something or posting it as an article online doesn't mean they know anything. .here's proof. go do what i told you to do. then change your power plan to high performance and make sure your processor throttling is off. proper cooling will cause the computer to never throttle or downclock due to heat (which is what you're experiencing.) i promise your experience with your laptop will be eons better and then you'll wipe your ass with the balanced power plan. they say things like that so grandma doesnt burn her cow thighs when she's watching the food network while playing solitaire.

i might sound like a jerk and i'm sorry, but it pains me to see people misusing or not being able to take full advantage of their technology because of what one person said or something they've heard through the grapevine that perhaps worried them. your cooling system on your cpu is definitely preventing a performance boost.

you said your dad had windows 10 before then he went back to 8.1? did u just roll back to 8.1? was this a fresh reformat? so many things could be causing this issue lol. going from a more bloated windows 10 to a less bloated 8.1 shouldnt cause a downgrade in performance either. weird stuff

that crappy laptop is probably using the integrated gpu instead of the discrete one, so you should update all the drivers
