144hz ?

Hi Guys Hope your well :)

Hi guys I have a Amd Rx 580 sapphire and a Acer GN246HL Predator. It is 144hz and 1ms response time but for some reason I cannot get it to 144hz or even above 60hz. I have tried to change it in the amd software and the Windows 10 display setting . I am using a DVI D dual Cable for 144hz and still it doesn’t want to show 144. Any ideas ? Also I have tried uninstalling and installing the drivers and that didn’t work either ...

Maybe you have a 'fake' dual link DVI cable?

TL;DW: the cable has the pins for dual link, but not the wires inside the cables to hook up the pins on either side of the cable.

Also, I can't find that monitor online. Does it have displayport on it? Maybe that will give 144Hz. Also, you should try to look around the monitor's menu, sometimes they have pretty basic stuff like this set there.

Bleh.

But from the answers on Amazon, I saw Acer mentioning this monitor only supports 144Hz via DVI, so... Different connections are not an option.

It still could be the DVI thing I suggested above.

I am using the dvi cable from the Acer monitor so i don’t think it would be a dodgy cable . I need to try and get to the bottom of this as I could of payed half the price of this 144hz as I am only getting 60hz :(

Make sure this is not a software cap before proceeding to play with the cables.  Since you use an RX580, Open AMD Radeon Settings, go to Gaming > Global Settings > Global Graphics (Radeon RX 580 Series).  Now look for the "Frame Rate Target Control" button. Make sure it is disabled. If enabled, it defaults to 60FPS and could be applying a FPS cap so-to-speak.

This may not be the problem, but I figured you should check.

Oh, but you can't get over 60hz even in your windows and monitor settings? Nevermind, this is probably not related. Sorry.

I felt the need to do a little research since I gave you such irrelevant advice earlier.  So...

1) I would assume they sent you a dual link cable capable of the full 144hz, but just in case,  check the cable > if it has 4 prongs around the blade on the connector (2 prongs above and 2 below the blade), then it is a standard DVI and not Dual link and so is only capable of 60Hz. That would be a problem.

2) I know you have tried reinstalling the driver, but even so, check to make sure windows does not list your monitor as a generic PnP or Tft device. If it does, try deleting the device (I don't think this will actually disable your display... I've been wrong before) and windows should automatically try to re-recognize the monitor.

3) Factory reset monitor in the monitor menu. Who knows, it could be that simple. I have a TV that I have to factory reset once every couple months for the hdmi to work.

4) Depending on the monitor, AMD Radeon Settings may or may not provide a menu for adjusting refresh rate.  If it is enabled for you, open up AMD Radeon Settings, in the bottom left go to Preferences > Additional Settings and then select you refresh rate on the pop up menu.  If you don't have the "Additional Settings" option then your computer doesn't think your monitor supports the option.

That is all I've got, best of luck!
