Processor and Motherboard suggestions

Stoinberg
Go to solution Solved by mariushm,

rather than 1700x maybe you should try a 2600  ... lower 65w TDP and higher default frequencies and the refined process allows for lower voltage so your overclocking may be better and also the 2xxx has better compatibility with memory and can do higher speeds

overclockers co uk prices not sure if they include vat or not

both have wifi/ac on it, good layout, heatsinks on vrm etc etc

1. Budget & Location

I'm still looking to buy a CPU and a motherboard to fit with my other components that I bought from different websites. I'm based in the UK and spending in pounds. I'm looking to buy most things on Amazon UK.

2. Aim

My aim is to make a mini-itx/micro-atx build that I can easily move around to lan parties or when move accommodation yearly. I'm looking for a PC that can run the latest games such as AC Odyssey at High settings at 1080p, I will use the computer to do some 3D modelling as well.

3. Monitors

I'm currently running a 1080p 60Hz HDMI monitor, I'm planning to upgrade in the future maybe a year from now to two monitors.

4. Peripherals

I already have all of the components except CPU and Motherboard.

These are my specs for now

CPU: N/A

Cooler: Noctua NH-L9x65 (Still haven't bought this though)

MOBO: N/A

Ram: 16 GB HyperX

GPU: EVGA 1060 6GB SC

PSU: EVGA G2 550

Storage: 250 Samsung EVO M.2 SSD, 1TB WD Green

Case: small, cheap case that I had lying around

I'm looking to spend around 300-350 pounds on CPU+motherboard combo, it would be preferable if the motherboard already had wifi in it.

I'm not sure if a R7 1700X + ASRock Mini-ITX AB350 Gaming-ITX/AC will cut it.

also, the noctua website says it's designed for chips up to 94 watt tdp, this one is 65, so you should be fine

Go with an i5-6600k for around £200, and a decent mini-ITX motherboard for sub-£100. You'll have money left over and still get solid performance.

Or like others have suggested, use a newer generation. Personal preference though, I'm a cheapskate what can I say ;)

for that price I would rather get a r5 2600, but also just a preference

@LukeSavenije I mean, I didn't display my full cheapness in that post...I'm currently planning a build with an i5-6500 and a 1050ti mini....both used... ;)

Most ITX motherboards nowadays should already have Wi-Fi built-in, so that shouldn't be a problem. I'd recommend a Core i5-8400 pair with the Asus ROG Strix B360-I, that makes a very solid combo imo.

Cheap =/= bad imho, I just like to hunt a bargain. Not too worried about cutting edge.
